WeCrashed Review: 4.4 (Season 1 Episode 4)

Reviews, WeCrashed

Another week, another new chapter of the over-inflation of WeWork’s value as Adam decides a new round of investments is needed to make the company work and expand rapidly on WeCrashed episode 4, “4.4.”

While the first three episodes tell the story using chronological jump back and forth in time, “4.4” tells the story by how much money we work loses a day which I find refreshing and fitting considering the story.

The charm is starting to wear off WeWork, as Benchmark Capital starts to question their investment throughout the hour as Adam goes around to introduce that new round for potential investors. They’re not buying it generally while Bruce is still trying to keep Adam happy, a long-running theme of this episode.

It’s not just Bruce trying to keep Adam happy but Miguel as well, as Lesley is no longer buying what her boss is trying to sell the public and the other employees of the company, and she spends most of the hour trying to make the co-founders see reason.

Adam: why are we not expanding faster?

Avi: because the landlords think your business model is bullshit.

At the top of the hour, we meet Avi, the head of leasing, on what looks like one of many hands-on meetings with top WeWork execs. He offers one of the few kernels of truth throughout the scene about the basic concept behind their company: they are landlords, not a tech company, and can’t be expected to expand like one.

So, with Benchmark starting to ask too many questions and Bruce telling him no, in walks in the next source of capital: SoftBank’s Masayoshi Son.

I understand that this is a dramatized telling of these events leading up to Adam’s forced resignation from the company after an explosive feature. Still, it’s honestly unbelievable that Adam Neumann was able to completely mislead one of the most prominent venture capitalists in the tech industry.

It’s a testament to his ability to manipulate people to get what he wants, having Son even agreeing to tour the WeWork space. But he’s not the only one as Rebekah keeps pace with manipulating people as Elishia Kennedy, played by America Ferrera, comes onto the scene.

While Rebekah’s looking for a deeper connection with a friend in place of the distance growing in her marriage, it becomes clear from Adam’s first meeting with Elishia that the friendship she’s hoping to develop won’t go far.

What’s fascinating about this show is how these characters willingly submit to this delusional vision, and there are moments you feel for Miguel and Rebekah’s situations. But with every new episode and decision made, you see them being given out to get out of this manipulative, complex relationship they’re in by people close to them. But instead of coming to terms with the truth that they already know.

They decide to bury themselves further in the delusion and this lifestyle that Adam has constructed for them. It’s all honestly infuriating.

Random Thoughts

  • The Ayn Rand conversation tells me everything I need to know about Rebekah.
  • The juxtaposition between the layoffs and that party at WeWork is terrible and so selfish of Adam.
  • I would love to see where Lesley ends up and if Bruce Dunlevy is still involved with WeWork.
