Netflix’s Marvel Properties Officially Leaving the Streaming Platform
It has been a long-fought battle, one that was brutal and messy at the best of times, but The Defenders properties are officially leaving Netflix on March 1, 2022.
The streaming platform’s license has ended, and all projects tied to Marvel’s The Defenders franchise will revert to Disney. This move includes Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Punisher, and The Defenders.
Viewers first noticed a note attached to these Netflix original series that read, “This show is available until March 1,” and Entertainment Weekly has confirmed the projects are being removed from the streaming platform at midnight on March 1.

This means Netflix’s superhero era is ending and taking with it the last remnants of Marvel’s original television phase.
It was indeed an exciting era of experimentation for the franchise. Netflix’s reign began in 2015 with Daredevil‘s arrival and came to an abrupt end in 2018 when Disney, hungry to start its streaming platform, pulled rank on Marvel Studios properties.
However, fanfare for the impeccable casting of characters like Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock, Krysten Ritter’s Jessica Jones, and Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle continued to make noise, and Disney has taken notice.
Three years after Daredevil‘s cancellation, Vincent D’Onofrio reprised his role as Kingpin during Hawkeye‘s six-episode run, confirming the property is still part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Not long after, Cox appeared as Peter Parker’s lawyer in Spider-Man: Now Way Home, sealing the deal on the Hell’s Kitchen-bound series returning in some capacity.

These recent cameos have brought forth a resurgence for Netflix’s properties, with Daredevil climbing its way back onto Netflix’s top 10 streaming chart. Additionally, Nielsen ratings confirm subscribers are actively rewatching the series following its reintroduction.
There is no current plan to further revive any of these shows, and Disney has not announced plans to release these properties to stream on its platforms.
With the fate of The Defenders once again up in the air, one has to hope they can find a home where Marvel fans can appreciate the road these series paved for newer Disney+ projects.
Long live Matt Murdock and this motley crew of heroes!
