Legacies Review: I Thought You’d Be Happier to See Me (Season 4 Episode 5)

Legacies, Reviews

Rebekah tries to reason with Hope, and Alaric fights for his life on Legacies Season 4 Episode 5, “I Thought You’d Be Happier to See Me.”

“I Thought You’d Be Happier to See Me” revolves around family and its importance. Rebekah is worried for her nieces’ wellbeing, so she attempts to coerce Hope into returning home with her. But, Hope proves that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree and instead chooses violence.

Seeing Hope follow in Niklaus’ footsteps ignites mixed feelings. Hope has been in the same cycle for too long, and now she’s venturing off on a new mission. It’s fresh and brings about a new twist, one where fans could see Hope at her supreme. That is if Hopes non-humanity sticks.

Legacies tends to toy around with new, likable situations and then reverts to normal within two or three episodes.

But, following in the footsteps of her father, no matter how thrilling, is sure to ruin a few relationships. Niklaus chose violence over love for most of his life and actively sabotaged the people around him. With no humanity, Hope can’t see any wrong in her actions and chalks it up to living in her father’s footsteps.

Lizzie’s distraught emotions towards Hope are justifiable. It’s upsetting that Hope, Lizzie, and Josie have finally gotten to a significant point in their relationship, and now it’s potentially ruined. However, it seems like Lizzie understands that it’s not the real Hope in charge. She sees with her own eyes that her humanity switched automatically when Landon died; it wasn’t something she did willingly.

The dilemma now is how Hope will react to her actions when it’s over. Her humanity is not going to be shut off forever, and when that veil fades, it’s going to be a disaster. The severity of the situation rests solely in her hands but will be chaotic regardless once her emotions begin to flood back.

She’s not going to be able to survive the guilt of her actions unless she has family in her corner for support. Rebekah’s introduction into the Legacies world is exciting in this instance because the potential for more is always there.

As much fun as it may be to toy with the thought of her being a villain, it’ll never stick. I give it three episodes of hunting the Triad before her humanity is restored.

I hope we see Hope stay on her course for a good portion of the season. Bringing back the Triad group from Season 1 allows introducing compelling new characters. There may even be a chance of seeing a familiar face along the road to Triad’s demise.

The only issue I have with the situation is how Hope has her humanity flip. I can understand the logistics of how and why it’s chosen for her to have no choice. But it feels like a lame attempt at a possible redemption later in the season.

One way or another, Hope switching her humanity off was inevitable. However, making it a non-consensual act allows her to apologize and proclaim it wasn’t her doing. But, you don’t have to be a brain surgeon to know that Hope would have flipped the switch regardless. Her handling Landon’s death on her own was never an option.

Touching back on familiar faces, I’m keeping all fingers and toes crossed that Claire Holt returns again. Having Rebekah return for the official Season 4 premiere is a brilliant cameo, and now it’s time she stays.

Rebekah needs to be the one to bring Davina, Kol, and Freya into the mix. It’s about time we see Hope and her family interacting more.

Other Thoughts:

  • Rebekah daggering Hope is a nice slight nod to The Originals. Too bad daggering doesn’t work the same way on a Tribrid.
  • Unfortunately, zero care is what I have for Alaric’s semi-death. The only thing that evokes emotions inside of me is how it makes Josie and Lizzie feel. Other than that, Alaric can kick rocks.
  • The love triangle between Ethan, MG, and Lizzie is already exhausting, and it’s barely started.
  • Cleo making the first move had me yelling with joy! I’m beyond ready for Cleo/Kaleb and Josie/Finch to become the main focus in the relationship game.

Favorite Quote:

  • “What I want is another song. Because you’re right, I’m a very fancy bitch, and country music is for garbage people. Run along and change it, will you?” – Rebekah.
