Turner & Hooch Review: In the Line of Fur (Season 1 Episode 4)

Reviews, Turner & Hooch

Turner & Hooch Season 1 Episode 4, “In the Line of Fur,” actually learns from past mistakes and makes some progress. It’s a miracle.

One of my main complaints from Turner & Hooch Season 1 Episode 3, “Diamonds are Furever,” was that Scott kept waiting until after Hooch messed up on the job to seek Erica’s help. This time around, Scott goes to Erica first to prep for the job.

Of course it is the shortest training ever, but this is progress! As is the fact that Hooch doesn’t mess up once during the job — dirty diaper eating aside. Hooch figures the whole thing out immediately, but it takes Erica cluing Scott in on possible reasons for Scott to put the pieces together.

It’s refreshing not to have Scott blaming Hooch for a variety of things; instead we see Scott frustrated by the judge’s behavior and him blowing up at Xavier. A little variety goes a long way.

The cases also help mix things up. We’re seeing a lot of different types of cases that the U.S. Marshals work on, and we don’t get the same type of case back to back. By mixing up the cases and changing up partners, Turner & Hooch is doing its best to keep the cases interesting and fresh.

One thing I’d love to see is Erica being involved with the case from the beginning. A ride along type episode could be fun. She could provide on the job training to Scott and Hooch, which they still desperately need. Erica tagging along at the courthouse brings a bit of chaotic energy to things, and Scott could use a bit of that, as could we.

Plus, Erica riding along could also provide some moments of tension if Brooke crosses their path.

Right now, it’s hard to feel anything about Brooke and Scott vs. Erica and Scott. Scott has failed to have chemistry with either woman. We at least have gotten to know and fall in love with Erica and her quirky self, so she has the leg up on Brooke in that aspect.

I’m not saying that Turner & Hooch needs to suddenly increase the romance aspect, but it’s clear that the show is heading towards an Erica or Brooke dilemmia for Scott. Whenever that moment arises, he needs to have romantic chemistry with at least one of them.

It is fun seeing everyone react to Scott and Brooke though — Laura’s “the Brooke that launched a thousand mopey playlists” comment, everyone noticing Scott’s hair, and Erica’s noticing his freshly exfoliated face. Scott needs people in his life to tease him a bit.

Stray Thoughts:
  • Laura’s side storyline with her ex is just okay.
  • I’m really not liking the dog-themed episode titles.
  • Angel staring at Scott at the park is so pure and so hilarious.
  • Laura and Scott’s investigation into their dad’s old files is starting to get boring.
