Turner & Hooch Review: Diamonds are Furever (Season 1 Episode 3)

Reviews, Turner & Hooch

Turner & Hooch Season 1 Episode 3, “Diamonds are Furever,” indicates that the show is falling into some bad patterns when it comes to how cases, and Scott and Hooch’s partnership, progress.

It goes a little something like this: Scott pressures Hooch to do something. It fails miserably. Scott seeks Erica’s help and actually does some training so he knows what he is doing. Miraculously, Scott works better with Hooch.

This routine is annoying. It’s not funny at all to watch Scott fail miserably since he really should know by now that he has no idea what he’s doing with Hooch and needs Erica’s help. But, this is starting to come across as a key moment in every case they work.

Turner & Hooch needs to immediately change this up. It would make more sense to have Scott and Hooch going through various training scenarios with Erica, independent of whatever case they are working. Then, whatever technique they learned during training can magically become useful to the case of the week.

Watching Scott and Hooch go through various training exercises, and most likely fail at them, could be hilarious. Anything is better than watching them go through this sad routine week after week. Let’s hope Turner & Hooch switches gears soon because I don’t know how much more of this I can take.

Despite this flaw, the case is not a total failure.

Jessica and Scott’s relationship really shines during the hour, especially her role as his mentor.

We know how much Scott needs to improve on the Hooch side of his job, and during “Diamonds are Furever,” we see how much Scott still has to learn about office politics and making his own way as a deputy. Jessica helps him navigate this, supporting him as he struggles with the T-squad.

It’s wonderful that Scott’s work world is expanding a bit, and the focus isn’t solely on him and Hooch. There are a lot of workplace dynamics to explore, and I’m hoping that the next one we get to experience is Scott and Xavier. It will definitely be fun watching them partner up and work together.

This case also features a better balance between investigative work and Hooch; we see Scott make the breakthroughs on his own, using Hooch’s behavior as further proof of his theory.

This shows that Turner & Hooch can strike a good balance between the two, although it would be nice to see more of Scott’s police work instead of hearing about it. Don’t be shy, Disney+, show us Scott’s vision board!

This issue also pops up with Scott and Laura’s investigation into their dad’s old case files. Scott reports findings to Laura, and we don’t see him actually looking anything up or going through the files. All we get is Scott giving an oral report on what he’s done, so it doesn’t quite feel like there’s an investigation happening.

It’s not entertaining to hear about what he’s found or not found. Perhaps once he and Laura go out and talk to the guy at the trailer park, there will be a bit more excitement in this storyline as we will actually see them doing something, instead of listening to them talk about it.
