Beverly Hills, 90210 Re-Watch: One Wedding and a Funeral (Season 6 Episode 10)

Beverly Hills 90210, Re-Watches

It’s sad to write this, but there is something undeniably satisfying about Antonia Marchette’s death on Beverly Hills, 90210 Season 6 Episode 10, “One Wedding and a Funeral.”

It’s not that I want Toni dead — I definitely do not. I love this show, but she’s definitely less annoying than all of the female regulars.

It’s just that Anthony is so smug and such a complete piece of trash that it’s hard not to feel good about the fact that the idiots he hires make a fatal mistake and kill the woman who means the most to him instead of their intended target.

Don’t they teach people to positively identify the target first in “Hitman 101”?

Toni doesn’t deserve to die, but her fatal flaw has always been believing that there is good in her father. It’s hard to fault her, that’s her daddy. But then again, how does she not see how awful her father is?

So, it’s sad but also inevitable. The person I feel the worst for on the episode is Bruno. That poor, poor, stupid man.

When he finally figures out that his boss put a hit on his own son-in-law, we at least know someone is on our side and trying to stop this.

The fact that someone is trying is at least satisfying enough, just like earlier in the hour when Brandon, Steve, and David save Dylan from certain death with the bachelor night. To call it a party would be wrong, but it’s still nice to watch.

“One Wedding and a Funeral” is Luke Perry’s original “farewell” episode, so there is a rollercoaster of emotions packed into an hour.

Side note: it’s so empowering to see the ladies living it up with strippers and cigars at the beach house.

The contrast of the guys saying heartfelt words to Dylan is perfect. Beverly Hills, 90210 is often cheesy and I need to start letting it go more because it’s just a fact. But those speeches feel real.

Similarly, Dylan and Antonia’s wedding is wonderfully simple and “them.” Even the reception is pretty basic for a wedding, which is rare on TV these days unless people are eloping.

“Messages” from characters who have long since departed the show are often unnecessary, but I can’t help that Brenda’s note tugs at my heartstrings. It’s absolutely ridiculous that she mentions that the “Brenda and Kelly” drama is settled once and for all.

The rest of it has to rip us apart just a little bit, because let’s be honest — I don’t know how it would end but Brenda and Antonia tension would have been more compelling to watch than Kelly’s snickers. (#BrendaandDylanforever).

The scene in which a dead Antonia falls into Dylan’s arms in the rain is too much to feel real. But even though I usually hate when shows move too fast, a quick funeral is the way to go here.

There isn’t even much to get mad at in the scene where Dylan tells Anthony he will not be murdering anyone, ever. It’s an example of a little bit of Beverly Hills, 90210 cheese seeping into an outstanding hour but it works.

Let’s also not ignore the pure ironic genius in the fact that a cat named Trouble basically saves Dylan’s life. (Or, to just add my own cheese Trouble gets him out of trouble).

Maybe it’s because years have passed or because I did not watch most episodes of Beverly Hills, 90210 live on my living room couch. But it feels almost peaceful and right to see Dylan — a widower after just over 24 hours — ride off into the sunset with a cat on the back of his motorcycle.

(R.I.P. Luke Perry).

PS: On a different note: Ray’s scene nearly ruins the episode for me it is so unnecessary it makes me want to scream!
