Legends of Tomorrow Review: Silence of the Sonograms (Season 6 Episode 13)

Legends of Tomorrow, Reviews

Legends of Tomorrow  Season 6 Episode 13, “Silence of the Sonograms,” sees the return of Bishop to set off the final arc for this season.

We should start this off by stating that this episode is, in no way, bad. A lot of it works very well, in fact. Far better than it has any right to. The individual components are Legends of Tomorrow doing what it does quite effectively. They are good showcases for what the show excels at.

They all hit a kind of sweet spot that the series is known for at this point. There’s a lot of nonsense involved but it’s layered with excellent character work and authentic emotion that’s been nicely woven in. Even Constantine’s magic blood abuse that’s standing in for drug use works better than it has in the last few episodes.

It’s not great but it works. It’s still obviously the weak link of the episode but if that’s the worst part as a show, then it’s still doing pretty well. The rest of the episode going from Mick’s pregnancy to Ava taking a turn at Clarice Starling, it’s all good individually.

As more than singular components, however, it ends up feeling a bit short and underwhelming. To be honest, we’re not even sure why that is. Maybe it’s a personal mindset. It’s possible that during another week with different amounts of chemicals roaming through the brain, this would all work better.

It’s also possible that this episode just doesn’t do it for us in the end and that has to be okay, too. That’s an impossible thing to answer without looking at the rest of the multiverse, though.

Whatever the case is, it’s an unsatisfying episode, but not an enjoyable one. There’s still plenty to like about it. If you make a batch of cookies and you end up leaving them in the oven for too long and they get all hard and crusty, they’re still recognizably cookies. You can still eat them and like it, even if it isn’t exactly how you wanted them to end up.

The show’s proverbial cookies in this case are still fairly tasty. For its credit, this is perhaps the first episode where Bishop felt like someone who could actually exist and not an esoteric weirdo who has a bunch of clones and is oddly threatening. This version of the character still falls into the latter category but there’s something more lived in there.

It helps that he is interacting with Ava instead of Sara this time and there’s a lot more baked-in emotion there with the creator-created dynamic. It’s the age-old question of what would happen if you were able to talk to God and what you would actually want to know from them.

A lot of Ava’s identity over the last few seasons has been rooted in this idea that she was a clone who got picked for some higher purpose and autonomy but we often haven’t gotten an idea of what that practically is like for her. What exactly separates her from a “normal” human being?

Centering that all around her upcoming wedding with Sara is an excellent grounding method for all of this.
