The Republic of Sarah Review: A Show of Hands (Season 1 Episode 6)

Reviews, The Republic Of Sarah

The people speak on The Republic of Sarah Season 1 Episode 6, “A Show of Hands,” so Greylock officially has Congresspeople.

In a return to form, watching everyone campaign is a snore compared to their personal drama, but the latter is juicy (and heartfelt) enough to make for a great episode of TV.

We must start with Sarah and Grover’s date at the pop-up nightclub that Grover creates in Sweetie Pie — it’s absolutely perfect. Of course, nothing is about this is surprising. Sarah is his best friend, so he obviously knows that her perfect night consists of a whiskey and ginger along with some dancing.

It’s a stark contrast to the vibe and odd tea that Weston’s date provides later on the episode, but more on that in a second because Grover and Sarah’s date gets sad quickly.

I’m really glad that the events of the episode prompt Grover to seek therapy to help him grieve Patience — but other than that I’m just as confused as Sarah is about everything.

Grover wants her but he’s not ready to date/be intimate with anyone else. On one hand, that’s understandable. But from our perspective he is ready to date Sarah, he is just scared.

She is not just a random woman, she has presumably seen every stage of his grief before The Republic of Sarah‘s story started. I think she would be able to handle taking the relationship slowly, as long as he is in it.

Luis foreshadows for us that Grover might not be ready. But his feelings for Sarah are so palpable it is hard to believe that even though he’s been in pain since we have known him.

Then again, it hits me like a knife when Sarah says Grover will make “someone else” very happy one day. She kills their future so quickly with those words. They are the intended endgame, so this is all just a device to add drama to their path together.

I don’t expect her to wait for him forever, but her words are so extreme. It’s just sad.

We know that Sarah and Grover are meant to be, so their story is easier to handle than AJ and Alexis’. I don’t think they’re meant to be at all, but the situation is so depressing.

This time, AJ is the villain of the relationship for telling William that Alexis is pregnant without even talking to her. It’s devastating to learn that Alexis had an abortion and now has to explain that to her husband thanks to her jealous secret girlfriend.

Their breakup is sad, but it’s right. AJ and Alexis have been portrayed as homewreckers and now AJ has betrayed Alexis in a horrible way. The Republic of Sarah needs to move away from this relationship and reassess the negative direction this portrayal is going in.

As for the elected Congress, it’s an eclectic enough group of people. Only AJ is Sarah’s friend at the moment, so there are definitely enough checks on her.

Maya being old enough to get elected is ridiculous but she’ll bring a necessary perspective. Plus, I always root for groups like the “misfit toys” Maya has declared herself the representative of.

The campaign trail also gives us a chance to learn more about Corrinne. It’s clearer now that she grew up “poor” and she and Danny were probably stuck in a little bit of a Romeo & Juliet situation at least in the sense that they are in different classes.

The glimpse we see makes me want to see even more. I don’t even remember if we know what Corrinne does for a living and we hardly see Adam, even in settings where a husband would definitely support his wife.

We are told Adam is at the election results with Josh. But, it’s pretty weird to see Corrinne go to Grover for a hug first if that’s the case. Obviously, she would seek support from friends when she loses but I’m not sure if it’s a lazy or purposeful choice not to have Adam on-screen.

Danny and Corrinne are the implied endgame right now. So it may very well be a purposeful choice. The Republic of Sarah is able to convey so much with just the congratulatory handshake between them. It’s a focus on-screen so that we know that it lingers.

Their chemistry isn’t firey, but it is definitely intimate. I like that we are learning that they are meant to be together because they know each other well and can push each other in the right direction when needed.

This probably is not going to help Greylock where the constitution is concerned because they are not together yet and Danny is still a “big, bad wolf” representing Lydon.

As hard as I try, I can’t hate Danny. I think that, eventually, the fact that he’s a native of Greylock will win out over the company that employs him. Otherwise, he would not care who from Lydon tried to get the Congress seat.

Notes

  • It’s weird that we’ve only learned that AJ’s name is Amy on this episode.
  • Sarah and Weston do have chemistry….Weston also has such Clark Kent vibes.
  • Even though Maya being in Congress is unique, the teenagers are still superfluous.

  • AJ and Alexis’ relationship has to go. Cheating is cheating and I really do not see any chemistry between the two women. AJ should follow Corinne’s advice and look for a nice, single woman that puts her first.
