Good Girls Review: Thank You For Your Support (Season 4 Episode 14)

Good Girls, Reviews

As Good Girls nears the end of its run it’s hard to find the tension anymore. Good Girls Season 4 Episode 14, “Thank You For Your Support,” is not much different than other episodes in that it feels somewhat cluttered and lacks tension.

Beth’s run for city council takes center stage, as it should. The thing is, that it doesn’t feel like there is ever really a threat to Beth not running. The episode quickly eats through the problems of financing and getting the signatures she needs to run to introduce Denise Carpenter as a rival.

After Good Girls Season 4 Episode 13, “You,” Denise Carpenter doesn’t seem like much of a threat, despite her slow-motion campaign slot complete with a cheesy heart motion graphic. We know that Beth can defeat her it’s just a matter of how, and “Thank You For Your Support,” just drives that point home.

The one thing that Good Girls does achieve on “Thank You For Your Support,” is putting Beth closer on the path of becoming like Nick and Rio. Setting up her own graffiti just to clean them up and intimidating her opponents with what looks like a home invasion, brings the story almost full circle.

(Remember when Rio started smashing up Beth’s dining room in Season 1?)

This is a huge shift because it’s bending Beth’s moral compass. A couple of seasons ago these women wouldn’t have compromised their beliefs for this.

Some may remember Good Girls Season 2 Episode 1, “I’d Rather Be Crafting,” when Beth and Annie wouldn’t unplug a fridge containing evidence that could implicate them because there were rape kits in the same fridge. They put people they didn’t know above themselves.

This was something to celebrate then, but as I’ve been saying in recent reviews, it’s time for the story to make a shift. The problem is, it’s shifting too late, and it feels like the story is just trying to buy time while it figures out where it wants to go.

Good Girls was always going to come to a fork in the road where it would have to choose between the group and one person. It’s time for them to make that choice and stick with it.

Once again, the side stories are the best part of the episode. Watching Vance and Dean go back and forth about the evidence had some tension for the last couple of episodes, but it seems to have fizzled.

The revelation that Vance doesn’t actually know the district attorney was an interesting revelation. Vance in particular has shamelessly flaunted his misogyny and he is convinced he’s right.

But he doesn’t have a leg to stand on.

“Thank You For Your Support” attempts to make us a little more sympathetic towards Vance by showing us the argument with his wife.  However, it doesn’t work because she’s right.

Face it, Vance! If you know the dog shouldn’t have people food and you put it in his bowl, and she gets mad at you for it, she’s not nagging you she’s just tired of dealing with the mess you’re making; and you deserve it.

I want to mourn the fact that this storyline has died a slow and horrible death, but I can’t because this was not the ending that Good Girls is meant to have. As much as I want tension in the story, this isn’t the right source.

My only question going into the last two episodes of the season is what does this mean for the show? Who is going to drive the central conflict?

Stray Thoughts
  • It would feel like a disservice not to applaud Dave and his brilliant illustration of how Rio and Nick’s operation works. The platform pump, the cutlet, the pasties, just top shelf explaining.
  • Ruby pointing out that The System is probably one of the best moments and it leans into some of the show’s ongoing commentary about predatory financial schemes.
  • It’s nice to see Nancy and Annie connecting, even if it is to push her and Kevin together. If this is what makes Annie happy then I’m all for it.
