‘Cruel Summer’ Renewed for Season 2
Freeform has renewed mystery drama Cruel Summer for Season 2, per Deadline.
The series follows the disappearance of popular girl Kate (Olivia Holt), and how nerdy outsider Jeanette (Chiara Aurelia) is connected.
Cruel Summer could feature the same cast and characters for a new story in Season 2, or go the anthology route, with the cast returning as new characters.
“We are so proud of this show and the incredible cast and crew who brought so much hard work and grit to every single scene. This wouldn’t have been possible without them and our mastermind showrunner, Tia Napolitano,” said executive producers Jessica Biel and Michelle Purple.
“To be picked up for a second season is a dream and we have so many ideas for where we can take this next. We are excited to get to work with our brilliant team of creatives on this project in addition to our partners at Freeform and eOne, including Jackie Sacerio who brought the project to us,” Biel and Purple continued. “To the audiences who have been tuning into this show week in and week out, thank you. This is all for you!”
Cruel Summer is now streaming on Hulu.

Peacock Renews ‘Girls5eva’ for Season 2
The comeback is officially a success as Girls5eva has been renewed for Season 2 at Peacock, per The Hollywood Reporter.
The musical comedy follows the middle-aged members of a ’90s girl group as they attempt to make a comeback. It stars Sara Bareilles, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Busy Philips, and Paula Pell.
“We are so excited to continue Girls5eva alongside this incredibly talented group of cast and producers,” NBCUniversal television and streaming’s scripted content president Lisa Katz said in a statement. “It was hard to miss the immediate fandom that was born after the launch of this series.
“This aspirational comeback story is filled with heart and friendship, perfectly blended with catchy-songs and humor, and delivered by an exceptionally versatile cast,” Katz continued. “We look forward to following this group’s journey as they continue to hit just the right notes.
Girls5eva is now streaming on Peacock.

HBO Max, Robin Thede Developing ‘Perfect Strangers’ Reboot
Fans of ’80s TV are getting another reboot, with Robin Thede and HBO Max developing an updated version of Perfect Strangers.
Variety reports, the project has received a script development deal, with Thede writing, executive producing, and starring.
The comedy features Thede and London Hughes as “Deja (Thede) and Poppy (Hughes) unexpectedly discover that they are half-sisters when they both inherit a one-bedroom apartment above a trap yoga studio in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. Polar opposites, they must learn how to live and work together.”
For the unfamiliar, the original Perfect Strangers ran for eight seasons from 1986 to 1993, and starred Mark Linn-Baker and Bronson Pinchot as distant cousins Larry and Balki. They hilariously learn to live together when Balki moves to America.
Perfect Strangers is streaming on Hulu.

Megan Boone Exiting ‘The Blacklist’
James Spader is losing his female lead, as Deadline reports Megan Boone will exit The Blacklist at the end of Season 8.
Boone’s Elizabeth Keen spent Season 8 on the run when she vowed revenge against Red for killing her mother. As a result, she became No. 1 on The Blacklist, and Boone was absent for eight episodes.
Boone’s exit leaves Spader, Diego Klattenhoff, and Harry Lennix as the last original cast members.
This decision is mutual and was made some time ago, so the writers have had time to give Liz a proper showdown with Red.
The Blacklist has been renewed for Season 9.

Disney+ Will Move Series Premieres to Wednesdays
The God of Mischief has once again altered the timeline, as the success of Loki has led Disney+ to change its series debut day from Friday to Wednesday.
Variety reports, the change includes scripted, animated, and unscripted series, beginning July 1.
Original movies and premier access theatricals will still premiere on Fridays.
New Disney+ series premiere dates: Monsters at Work on July 7, Turner & Hooch on July 21, Chip ‘n’ Dale: Park Life on July 28, Turning the Tables with Robin Roberts on July 28, The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse on July 28, Growing Up Animal on Aug. 18, and Short Circuit on Aug. 4.
Loki is now streaming on Disney+, with new episodes every Wednesday.
