What to Watch on TV: Black Lightning, The Bold Type, Lucifer
Welcome to a new week and another round of What to Watch on TV for the week of May 23rd! We’ll be sharing our picks for what to watch this week, from marathons to big guest spots, and significant episodes of TV to look forward to while stuck inside.
This week’s picks include the finale of A Black Lady Sketch Show, farewells for All Rise and Black Lightning, and more.

In Treatment – Sunday, May 23

After a decade off the air, the series is back with a new cast of characters ready to take the chair, featuring Uzo Aduba and Anthony Ramos to Liza Colon-Zayas and John Benjamin Hickey. In Treatment returns Sunday, May 23 at 9/8c on HBO.
Series Description: The reimagining of the series is set in present-day Los Angeles and brings a diverse trio of patients in session with Brooke to help navigate a variety of modern concerns. Issues such as the global pandemic and recent major social and cultural shifts are a backdrop to the work Brooke will undertake — all while she deals with complications in her own personal life. In Treatment Season 4 also stars Anthony Ramos (Hamilton) as Eladio, who works as a home health aide for a wealthy family’s adult son; Liza Colón-Zayas (David Makes Man) as Rita, Brooke’s longtime confidant and friend who supports Brooke as she contends with her own demons after a life-altering loss; John Benjamin Hickey (Jessica Jones) as Colin, a charming millionaire beach bum turned white-collar criminal reckoning with all the ways his life has changed following his recent release from prison; Quintessa Swindell (HBO’s Euphoria) as Laila, Brooke’s distrustful, teenage client, struggling to carve out her own identity separate from her family’s overbearing expectations; and Joel Kinnaman (For All Mankind) as Adam, Brooke’s long-time on-again, off-again boyfriend who has resurfaced to create further complexity for her.
Black Monday – Sunday, May 23

While Mo is working on developing his career as a jazz producer, Dawn is serving time, and Blair is learning about politics. Black Monday returns Sunday, May 23 at 10/9c on Showtime.
Episode Description: It’s 1989 and Mo makes his first big “discovery” as a newly minted jazz producer. Dawn’s still serving time for masterminding Black Monday, Blair learns the hard way how to play politics, and Keith discovers that the late Lenny Leighman has some big follicles to fill. Mo hatches a plot to get Dawn an early release. Season premiere.
Black Lightning – Monday, May 24

It’s time to say goodbye to the Pierce family as they face down their final battle, celebrate a wedding, and hopefully get a happy ending. Will everyone make it to the end? Black Lightning ends Monday, May 24 at 9/8c on The CW.
Episode Description: After four seasons, the game-changing, relevant and electrifying series comes to an end.
All Rise – Monday, May 24

In the face of behind-the-scenes issues, it’s time for an impromptu sign-off for Lola and company as a murder trial looms. All Rise’s series finale airs Monday, May 24 at 10/9c on CBS.
Episode Description: Lola faces tension in all aspects of her life, and the pressure continues to mount when she agrees to allow media in the courtroom for a high-profile murder trial.
Cruel Summer – Tuesday, May 25

Family secrets struggle to stay hidden, and there’s an attempt to get Kate onto the “Marsha Bailey Show.” Cruel Summer airs Tuesday, May 25 at 10/9c on Freeform.
Episode Description: Kate struggles with a family secret she’s been holding on to; Joy tries to convince Kate to go on “The Marsha Bailey Show”; Mallory has a birthday surprise.
The Bold Type – Wednesday, May 26

The ladies are kicking off their final season with big decisions, big consequences, and big career moments. The Bold Type returns Wednesday, May 26 at 10/9c on Freeform.
Episode Description: Jane races to finish a high-risk expose that could have repercussions for Jacqueline. Sutton has a chance to shine at a Scarlet retreat if she can regain her focus. And Kat wants to stay true to herself while making a big decision.
Hacks – Thursday, May 27

The series starring Jean Smart digs deeper into the dark mentorship between Deborah and Ava. Two new episodes of Hacks drop Thursday, May 27 on HBO Max.
Series Description: Hacks explores a dark mentorship that forms between Deborah Vance (Jean Smart), a legendary Las Vegas comedian, and an entitled, outcast 25-year-old (Hannah Einbinder).
Lucifer Season 5 Part 2 – Friday, May 28

God makes an appearance, sacrifices are made, and some big questions are answered. Lucifer Season 5 Part 2 drops Friday, May 28 on Netflix.
Season Description: In Part B of the stunning fifth season of Lucifer, God himself comes to Earth. Secrets will be revealed, heroic sacrifices will be made, and the world will never be the same.
A Black Lady Sketch Show – Friday, May 28
Almost as quickly as it premiered, Robin Thede’s sketch show wraps up its sophomore season with a few parting, wild, and hilarious sketches to hold fans over. A Black Lady Sketch Show airs Friday, May 28 at 11/10c on HBO.
Episode Description: A woman on a date faces tough questions; friends split the check; a couple braves a family reunion.
