Uzo Aduba’s win for this year’s Critics Choice Awards feels especially timely given that it’s Women’s History Month.

The actress won the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series for her role as Shirley Chisholm on Mrs. America

After winning the award, the actress spoke with reporters during a virtual press conference about her role on the series and her reaction to the big win.

“I love Shirley Chisholm because of her strength. I think the possibility she inspired in so many women who came after her, not just in politics but in all areas of life. That can-do attitude, that anything is possible despite no existing template. You can be and do anything that you want to be in this life,” Aduba said.

Aduba also shared what this role meant to her personally and what her biggest takaways were.

“I think the thing I will take with me always that I got most out of her story is believing in what you think is possible for yourself, and being sure to live by the definition you have for yourself, not the definitions or limitations that others have,” she said.

The fact that it’s Women’s History Month also made the win even more significant, which Aduba spoke a bit about as well.

“What we’re celebrating in this month really is exemplary of the walk and the doors that were opened by those women who championed our lives today. You know, whether we know it or not, we are receiving the ripple effects of those actions and those champions.”
