Call Me Kat Review: Salsa (Season 1 Episode 12)
A salsa dancing lesson between Kat and Max leads to relationship tension on Call Me Kat Season 1 Episode 12, “Salsa.”
After a few bumpy episodes, Call Me Kat is back to the charming, funny show we enjoyed earlier in the season. With the focus back on relationships, and the show finding the right balance between comedy and full-on absurdity, it’s finally found its tone.
We’ve even come full circle on Kat and Max.
Yes, we know we’ve been down on them being a couple since day one.
However, now that things are a little less one-sided, and Mayim Bialik and Cheyenne Jackson have settled into a more comfortable chemistry, we’re on board.
During the dance lesson, it becomes clear Kat’s attraction to Max will never truly go away. Their history creates a connection that no one else will ever live up to or match.
Unfortunately, we’re now the ones in an unrequited love story because just when we get invested in Kat and Max, the duo has a big fight. The episode ends with Max storming out of the café, leaving us to wonder what the future holds for the pair.
This time it’s not a crazy, embarrassing meltdown that gets Kat in trouble, it’s a wild reaction to sleeping pills which leads to her sending Max’s ex Brigitte an incriminating email.
She obviously wasn’t trying to hurt Max or his relationship but he can’t see it that way given he has spent the entire episode helping her impress Oscar.
While we’re here, we need to take a minute and talk about Brigitte. We’ve only seen her as a hilarious figment of Kat’s imagination. We don’t know if the real Brigitte is anything like Kat’s creation, but we can’t see anyone else but Schuyler Helford playing her.
The show has used Kat as a straight woman for Brigitte to pop in and torment her with one-liners in a way that’s uniquely Call Me Kat.
Helford and Bialik are a great comedy team, which is something you don’t always get to say about the ex-girlfriend and possible next girlfriend.
While Kat is losing herself to sleepwalking, Randi starts hanging out with Carter to deal with post-breakup insomnia. Since Carter has been hitting on her all season, I thought we would get the stereotypical “surprise” hookup.
As cute as these two are together, we only need one muddled relationship at a time. The two have hinted at a “friends with benefits” situation but Randi is too good to settle for that, so we hope it’s just a quick moment they move on from.
There’s a side story about Phil and Sheila trying to meet Dolly Parton, which really just leads to a lot of Dolly puns.
However, it does leave us wondering why it has taken Call Me Kat this long to pair up TV vets Leslie Jordan and Swoosie Kurtz. They have the kind of magical comedic timing together that only comes from experience.
Despite the slight cliffhanger, this marks the series’ first complete episode of the season. You don’t feel like something is missing, or that the show is trying too hard.
This is the Call Me Kat we’ve been waiting all season for.

The Episode Salsa Showed Cheyenne Who plays Max plays Great Emotion On Winning His Ex back. I feel Like Him Being Mad At Kat No Matter how Kat End Up Intervening. THEN Oscar Who Is Kat’s Boyfriend Is a Great Cushion To Land On Especially With Max of Course Being Mad at Kat For Her Intervention. So The Fact Kat Danced With Max With Guilt on Her Shoulders kinda Faded off as Max Aided Kat For Her Relationship and Kat Inadvertently Burned His Bridges
