Call Me Kat Review: Cat-A-Versary (Season 1 Episode 13)
Kat celebrates the one-year anniversary of the café in a unique way on Call Me Kat Season 1 Episode 13, “Cat-A-Versary.”
The death of the first cat Kat rescued highlights the differences between Max and Oscar, causing Kat to once again get confused about her love life.
Despite the sad nature of the storyline, this is a nice, light-hearted episode that beautifully handles grief. As Kat struggled with her sadness, Phil points out that they could have a celebration of life instead of mourning.

It is a genuinely sweet Call Me Kat way to deal with loss.
These unique moments are what make the show worth sticking with. Yes, it hits the usual sitcom marks, but it’s never in the order or manner that we expect.
When we left off, Max was mad at Kat about emailing his ex Brigitte while under the influence of sleeping pills. Thankfully for fans, her loss leads them to make up quickly.
There comes a point in every show where the will they/won’t they gets ridiculous. For most shows, it takes a couple of seasons. Unfortunately, Call Me Kat has reached that point already.

No matter how much of a good guy Oscar or anyone else is, they will never be Max.
The sooner Kat realizes this, the sooner we can get to the interesting stories that come from the two of them trying to transition from friends to lovers.
For characters with the long history that Kat and Max have, a drastic change in their relationship can make for a myriad of comedic yet authentic stories. It would add new layers to their friendship, while also releasing them from the romance limbo they’re stuck in.
We end on a cliffhanger where Kat is trying to decide between Max and Oscar, right after Max has finally confessed his feelings for her. It doesn’t seem like much of a choice. We don’t know anyone who wouldn’t pick Cheyenne Jackson.

While Kat is figuring things out, Randi has definitely bounced back from Daniel.
So, about Randi and Carter. Since they’re keeping things secret, and we’ve heard enough about Randi’s fear of commitment to know she’s not jumping into another relationship, we assume this is a friends with benefits situation.
I’m not sure if I want a full-fledged relationship between these two, but how can we not love the fun, push/pull dynamic they have. They are grown folks who’ve been through it, so there are no games. It’s clear what’s expected, so it’s hassle-free to watch.

I can’t leave the season finale of Call Me Kat without obsessing over Leslie Jordan one more time. Phil has a crush on the repairman Ray. We don’t know anything about him yet, but we do know he and Phil have amazing chemistry.
It would be great to see Phil get some romance in Season 2. We sympathized as he dealt with his heartbreak. Now we want to see him find someone who will appreciate him for the awesome, loyal guy he is. If that’s not Ray, we’re going to need rotating guest stars to play off of Jordan’s brilliance.
As we reach the end of Call Me Kat Season 1, we really hope to see the show come back. Though there were a few bumpy episodes along the way, the show has found its fresh, unique voice; and we definitely want to see more of Kat’s café and its crazy cast of characters.
