Superstore Review: Biscuit (Season 6 Episode 6)

Reviews, Superstore

Superstore has always confidently tackled serious topics and has (mostly) done that well. But perhaps the best attribute of the show has been its ability to balance that seriousness with inherent silliness.

Superstore Season 6 Episode 6, “Biscuit,” leans into the show’s silliness. Instead of tackling hot button political issues, the Cloud 9 crew turns now to issues about Sandra raising money for her cat’s surgery, and Glenn’s adjustments as he returns to work from self-isolation. Oh, and Garrett struggling with returns is a highlight.

Basically none of these stories is incredibly important, and only one affects the show going forward in a meaningful way. Yet all of them are funny and delightful to watch.

Let’s start with Sandra’s cat.

As uncomfortable as some of these scenes are to watch (cringe comedy isn’t for everyone) there is still plenty of hilarity to be had surrounding Biscuit and her impending surgery and then her untimely demise. Watching the uncomfortable coworkers navigate the awkwardness of having donated money for a surgery that never happened is painful, but also very funny.

Then there’s Glenn and Dina.

Glenn’s return from COVID quarantine has rattled him a little, and he’s a little put off by the fact that Dina has managed things so smoothly in his absence. But of course this leads down a hysterical path that includes enlisting Bo and his friends to “check for holes in the security.” Anytime you see Bo you know the episode is going to be good, but this one especially.

Glenn and Dina’s story is the only one that will truly have an impact going forward. Glenn recognizes Dina’s mastery of the job in his absence and the fact that he’s getting a bit long in the tooth, so they work out a co-management arrangement with corporate. Hopefully this doesn’t go like Michael Scott and Jim Halpert’s co-management arrangement, but that could be funny!

Mark McKinney and Lauren Ash’s dynamic really benefits the show — but especially on this story!

Honestly, Dina is at her best doing loss prevention and no one can convince me otherwise!

Finally, we have Garrett’s story.

Garrett struggling to return items from other Zephra subsidiaries is hilarious for more than one reason, but the main one is the way it blatantly reflects real life. Amazon, for instance, now has real stores you can return things to. So the fictional Zephra reflects more than just a catalyst for Amy to leave.

A few stray thoughts:
  • “I’d give money too if I tried to kill that cat.” Yet somehow, Carol still guilts the rest of them into it.
  • I’ve never heard of having your pet’s ashes turned into a diamond — but apparently it’s a real thing!
  • The Glenn and Bo dynamic is always a fun time. But what do you expect from the “boss-in-law”?
  • “I mean this in the nicest way. Get the hell away from me with that jar.”
