Previews

The CW’s newest Canadian import, Trickster, premieres this Tuesday with Trickster Season 1 Episode 1.

The series, based on author, Eden Robinson’s, trilogy, follows Jared, a Haisla teen living in Kitimat, British Columbia as he tries to support his family on his salary from a fast-food job and by making and selling ecstasy.

Weird things start to happen though. Things that will send Jared down a path that will reveal his own connection to a supernatural world he had no idea existed.

The series draws on the traditional folklore of the Haisla nation, of which Robinson is a member, and centers the experiences of indigenous characters, making it unlike most of the other sci-fi/fantasy shows on TV.

While a recent controversy about Season 1 showrunner, Michelle Latimer’s, heritage casts an unfortunate shadow on the show’s efforts to be an example of authentic representation, the series source material, as well as its preview images, promise a show that elevates stories and perspectives we don’t see often as well as an intriguing supernatural ride.

Episode description: When a drug dealer threatens his mom over outstanding debt, Jared struggles to come up with the money to save her, while frightening hallucinations hint at much bigger troubles lurking right around the corner.
