Supernatural Review: Last Holiday (Season 15 Episode 14)

Reviews, Supernatural

The most bittersweet sentence in this review will be right at the beginning — Supernatural is back for its final run of episodes. “Back” is exciting. “Final” is devastating.

Supernatural Season 15 Episode 14, “Last Holiday” truly feels like an appropriate way to re-enter the Supernatural universe after a pandemic related pause in production. It’s funny, it has monsters, and it connects to the larger season arc in an appropriate way.

It goes without saying that Sam and Dean usually don’t get to celebrate holidays, so meeting the Men of Letters’ mothering wood nymph who insists that they live better lives is a fun take on “self-care” for Sam and Dean. If this weren’t the final run of episodes, I’d expect Mrs. Butters to be a fun recurring character.

Regardless of Mrs. Butters’ status, “Last Holiday” delivers laughs, and is a good reminder for fans of the mission at hand before the final run of episodes. It does well to remind fans of the mission while still being a strong standalone installment of the show. It’s truly the perfect kick-off for the show’s final run.

Really, the only complaint I have is that Mrs. Butters trying to subdue and kill Jack is a bit tired at this point. I think viewers recognize how the rest of the world sees Jack, and Mrs. Butters is simply a reflection of that. Still, Mrs. Butters’ assault on Jack gives he and Dean some important time to communicate about their relationship, which is something that’s necessary going forward.

Dean Winchester: Sure it does!

“Last Holiday” and the introduction of Mrs. Butters make for a strong kick-off to Supernatural‘s final run, but also take a fun trip down memory lane, with Men of Letters and Abaddon flashbacks and references. It’s a great reminder of the long and full history that Supernatural has.

“Last Holiday” feels new and fresh and fun, but at the same time a nostalgic feel for long-time Supernatural fans. It’s a great final return for the show, and tons of fun to boot.

A few stray thoughts:

  • Now that Jack has his soul back, it’s the perfect time for he and Dean to deal with their relationship. They started to on “Last Holiday,” but I expect more moments like that in the near future.
  • Any guesses on returning characters? I’m sure we’ll see Bobby, God, and Michael again, but I’m hoping for as many as possible on this final stretch. Maybe an encore for Mrs. Butters at least?
  • Sam showing up to monster hunt with Mjolnir is absolutely priceless. What a fantastic moment.
  • Of course the best bit on “Last Holiday” is 100% Dean and his nightgown. Dean and Jensen Ackles are clearly enjoying it as much as viewers (hopefully) are.
