Coroner Review: The Suburbs (Season 1 Episode 7)

Coroner, Reviews

Coroner Season 1 Episode 7, “The Suburbs,” is most likely referring to the open house where suspected serial killer Gerald Henry Jones confronts Detective McAvoy and Greer.

It’s even more fitting when you consider the pace of the episode, which is rather slow compared to the rest of the season.

Jenny would probably agree, but unfortunately, it can’t be helped.

A radioactive body is a great reason for a lockdown and Jenny does all she can do when she figures out that Glen King unintentionally kills himself by chewing Nicotine after it’s been exposed to radioactive chemicals.

The story is worth watching. Plus, Glen and Camilla’s affair being a red herring is a twist on how affairs are usually presented on TV.

However, the episode is mostly just filler when it comes to the stories we care about most.

Ian and Jenny have a surprisingly honest (if harsh) conversational rapport and work well together for a former employee and boss (who happened to be the person that fired him).

The build-up of that unique connection is powerful enough that we feel the sting of Jenny finding Ian dead in the last few minutes of the episode.

It makes sense. There is no better way to forge that bond than exactly how Ian and Jenny do it during this one particular episode. Yet, it still has the slightly bitter taste of a tease.

One has to hope more answers are coming. But if we don’t find out why Ian’s work has gotten sloppy over the past 10 years, I’m going to be upset.

“The Suburbs” is the penultimate episode of Season 1, so we get none of the answers we want about anyone’s personal issues either.

Liam conveniently leaves Jenny’s building in time to avoid lockdown and help Gordon, but we still don’t know who the woman that so rudely interrupted Thanksgiving dinner is. Nor, do we know where he and Jenny stand.

This is predictable but renders the first scene with Jenny and Liam in her office lobby almost superfluous.

We don’t know much about where Ross and Jenny stand, either. And I’m as confused as Jenny about whether Arsky killed Katie or not.

Plus, we may know more about their brief encounter off-screen, but Alison and Sabina do not have enough screen time.

Over in the suburbs on Detective McAvoy’s side of things, it’s hard to get invested in the story other than hoping things go right for the good guys because serial killers are bad.

There is nothing overtly wrong with “The Suburbs.” But nothing goes right enough to consider it among Coroner‘s strongest episodes.
