Miracle Workers: Dark Ages Review: Moving Out Part 1 (Season 2 Episode 9)

Miracle Workers, Reviews

Things move fast once they click into place, and for Al and Chauncley, their choices are sending them down paths that sound good on paper, but may not be for them on Miracle Workers: Dark Ages Season 2 Episode 9, “Moving Out Part 1.”

The episode cleverly gives Al and Chauncley what they really wanted: a chance to a bigger world, and someone who understands them, respectively. But it’s the classic “be careful what you wish for” scenario, where the drawbacks are too great to fully commit to leaving behind everything they know.

While Vicky may be kind and share Chauncley’s fondness for ducks, it’s the conversation that Chauncley’s life is essentially plotted out already, down to his death even, that leaves the infinite possibilities he’s interested in at a loss. Both Chauncley and Al are driven by the possible, where they don’t know what they really want outside of the option to do whatever they want, and that’s being tested at every turn.

For Al, it’s not clear if Cosmos is the one she’s been waiting for, either. It’s hard to say how long Al could stay in Paris, or if she makes it all the way, before considering returning home. Cosmos isn’t entirely the most fulfilling person, and while her dreams may be elsewhere, her ties to her family and her friends are that overpowering factor, making sure they are safe more paramount than her own future.

It’s the love she holds for them, and the protection potato as the reminder of the protection they provided her throughout her life, that makes her go back as their lives are threatened. She’s putting her dreams on hold for them to do the same for them. She’s not letting go of her dreams forever, which is important, but doing what’s right in the moment.

The irony is impressively thick that Chauncley standing up for himself for the first time is the potential downfall of the kingdom. Choosing the right thing for him turns out to be a very bad mistake, even if the entire season has built him to this point. Chauncley can’t catch a break, much to the delight of the show (and us).

The question of what possibly comes next is that Chauncley may need to stand up for himself even more to become the voice of the people. He may need Al at his side to inspire that sort of confidence, however, so patching up their relationship is likely the next move. But it’s appreciated how casual the madness is, how there’s still some lightness despite the horrors about to be inflicted on everyone.

The focused story also allows for some great character asides, like Ed and Mikey trying to bring Paris to Al in order to keep her home. Their attempt to act cultured, only for it to lead to Ed threatening Mikey, is a great gag. As mentioned on previous episodes, the show has really captured itself during this second half of the season, where it has figured itself out and knows how to deliver great character moments.

Lord Vexler’s disappointed coaxing of Chauncley at the start of the episode is another great bit, Karan Soni displaying levels of contempt for Chauncley’s state that continues to show him as the character who suffers the most under Cragnoor’s rule for putting up with such ridiculousness.

But now everyone needs to band together, or else Miracle Workers: Dark Ages Season 2 Episode 9, “Moving Out Part 1,” will be the last bit of joy they may see. The show is leaning toward sentimentality more and more, and so perhaps that will be the way to victory and peace once more.

One thing is certain: this show has found its stride and continues to deliver a great time with fun at its center.
