TV News Wrap-Up: ABC Eyes ‘Revenge’ Follow-Up, GLAAD Reports All-Time High in LGBTQ TV Representation, Hulu to Become Streaming Home for FX, and More

Dates are set, series have been ordered, and things are moving. 

This week has been one of new series in development, final season and finale announcements, and some exciting streaming news. 

Take a look at this in more in this week’s TV news wrap-up. 

Fresh Off The Boat will end with Season 6. Deadline reports that the game-changing family comedy will conclude with an hour-long finale on Friday, February 21st. The decision to end the series is not unexpected. The cast’s contracts end after six seasons and there was speculation that Constance Wu wouldn’t want to reup after her reaction to the Season 6 renewal. Series star, Randall Park, also launched his own production company earlier this year and signed a first-look deal with 20th TV.

ABC is eyeing a Revenge follow-up series. Earlier this week, news broke that ABC is exploring the idea of a follow-up series that will follow at Latinx immigrant who arrives in Malibu to exact revenge on a pharmacutical dynasty whose greed led to the murder of her biochemist mother. Starz is developing a Weeds sequel with Mary-Louise Parker. Variety broke the news that the project was revealed by Lionsgate TV in a second-quarter earnings call on Thursday. Parker is currently attached to produce and star in the new series. The reboot will pick up 10 years after the events of original series which concluded in 2012. The new series will spotlight the era of marijuana legalization.

WEEDS

We have a date for the final farewells of Supernatural and Arrow. The CW announced series finale dates for both the beloved series. Arrow will be taking a final bow on Tuesday, January 28th and Supernatural will conclude on Monday, May 18th. The CW also announced that Supernatural will begin airing on Mondays when it returns midseason. Read more about the series finales right here

A GLAAD report reveals that LGBTQ TV representation is at an all-time high. Deadline reports that GLAAD’s annual “Where We Are on TV” report shown a rise in LGBTQ series regulars, a significant increase in racial diversity in LGBTQ characters on broadcast in cable, and LGBTQ women outnumbering men 53% to 47%, a first in the report’s 24-year history. There was a decreased in LGBTQ diversity on streaming services.

The CW announced multiple midseason premiere dates. Legends of Tommorrow, Katy Keene, and Roswell, New Mexico will all be returning in 2020. Legends of Tommorrow will be premiering on the heels of the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover in Tuesday, January 21. Katy Keene will premiere Thursday, February 6 and Roswell, New Mexico will be returing Monday, March 16. Read more about these premiere dates right here

Hulu is set to become the streaming of FX series, with three original series debuting online next year. According to Deadline, four series will debut online as part of a new partnership with the streaming service called ‘FX on Hulu.’ The offerings will include the Cate Blanchett-led mini series Ms. America,Alex Garland’s Devs, A Teacher, Jeff Bridges-starring The Old Man. The streaming service will also host most of FX’s catalog and new episodes of American Horror Story will be available the day after it airs.

D’Arcy Carden is in talks to star in Amazon’s A League of Their Own.  Deadline reports that The Good Place star is in negotiations to play Greta, “a beautiful and worldly player who once was in the Army.” The series, an adaptation of the 1992 film, was originally set ups a half-hour comedy has been converted to a hour-long series ahead of a quiet pilot order.

There’s a lot of news regarding NBC’s Superstore this week. According to Deadline the network has upped the Superstore Season 5 order to 22 episodes. TV Line also reports that Breaking Bad alum Dean Norris will be joining the cast as Dina’s estranged father.
