Batwoman Review: Who Are You? (Season 1 Episode 4)

Batwoman, Reviews

On Batwoman Season 1 Episode 4, “Who Are You?,” Kate struggles with the challenge of leading a double life. It’s not what you’d initially think of as one of the main problems of being a superhero/vigilante, but it’s definitely in the top three.

Before this, the fact that Kate didn’t have a job didn’t even dawn on me. But now that “Who Are You?” mentions it, Kate does need to find herself a day job that can serve as a cover story if need be.

Batwoman is really taking its time exploring all the little hiccups that Kate (and Luke) experiences as she takes on the role as Batwoman.

Nothing is rushed, and all these issues don’t suddenly pop up at once either. Both her and Luke are figuring things out as they go along. The batarang issue is a fun way to show that Luke and Kate are still getting all their ducks in a row.

I wonder what Kate’s next superhero lesson will be.

Somehow, Kate’s going to have to get Sophie off her trail. Thankfully, Sophie isn’t trying to apprehend Kate/Batwoman at the moment; she’s simply adding in her commentary while she helps Kate with whatever random request she has that day.

Batwoman Season 1 Episode 4 Sophie

It’s sweet that Kate’s real estate firm idea comes from her time with Reagan. They are so cute together. I’m really going to miss Reagan; I ship her with Kate more than I do Sophie at the moment.

Maybe once Kate gets the handle on lying a bit better, they can reconnect.

Watching Kate horribly, horribly lie is a surprising bit of humor in the hour. It’s like it didn’t dawn on her before Reagan that she would have to come up with excuses to dash out unexpectedly.

Alice: You know the thing I love about bad guys? Is that despite ourselves, we are all so tragically predictable.

Now, let’s talk about Catherine.

It’s a little difficult to figure out what to make of her. She could become a villain in the story, or maybe she’s just the villain in Alice’s story. Alice does lump Catherine along with her in the bad guys category, but that still could be just because of what Catherine personally did to her.

Catherine being the bad guy in Alice’s story would be a more interesting move. Usually the bad guy’s nemesis is the superhero, or at least it becomes that way after they have a couple of run-ins.

Batwoman Season 1 Episode 4 Mary

Catherine being an all-around bad guy is a bit too obvious, and it would be a lot more fun to watch her and Alice battle it out while Kate and Jacob/The Crows have to figure out where they stand.

For now, the ambiguity around Catherine works. She’s a puzzle to be solved, but at some point, we will need a bit more clarity on where exactly she stands.

While it’s unclear whether or not she’s a good or bad guy, she’s definitely not likable after she owns up to faking Beth’s skull fragments. That’s something unforgivable, at least in my books.

This can’t be something that Kate nor Jacob easily moves past, and I hope it at least pushes Jacob to have a conversation with Alice.

Stray Thoughts:
  • Mary pretending to be Alice is proof that she is an absolute GIFT and should be protected at all costs.
  • Magpie’s takedown is a bit too theatrical. Let’s tone it down a touch.
  • Speaking of Magpie, as a villain of the week goes, she is just meh.
