Violett Beane Discusses ‘God Friended Me’ Season 2 and What’s Ahead for Cara Bloom [Exclusive Interview]

Interviews

Violett Beane is back as Cara Bloom in God Friended Me Season 2.

Season 1 of the CBS comedy followed Miles (Brandon Michael Hall), an outspoken atheist who got a friend request from a social media account claiming to be God. By following friend suggestions from the account, Miles becomes an agent of change in the lives of people around him.

Alongside him is Beane’s character, Cara Bloom, a journalist Miles met through the God Account who is deeply invested in figuring out who might be behind it.

I recently spoke with Beane about what’s in store for Cara in Season 2, filming in Paris, and who she thinks might be behind the God Account.

God Friended Me Season 2 picks about a month after the Season 1 cliffhanger with Cara in Paris writing Simon’s (Adam Goldberg’s) book.

“[It] is proving a little bit more difficult than she expected because Simon is a very closed off person, and he’s put up a lot of walls to get to where he is today. Cara likes to write about the people behind the inventions, not the inventions themselves. She’s finding it difficult to break down some of those walls,” Beane explained.

While Cara is in Paris, Miles and Rakesh look for Joy (Jessica Lu), a new character who was friended by the God Account and who Miles and Rakesh (Suraj Sharma) had not been able to find until the Season 2 premiere.

Despite the distance, they’re still Cara is still up to date on what’s happening with the God Account.

“She’s FaceTiming Miles and Rakesh and they’re trying to keep her in the loop, but she does feel sort of left out, and like she’s missing a part of what drives her as a person,” Beane said.

The separation won’t last too long. Beane went on to explain how this three-episode arc would transform her character in a profound way, and how it might be the work of the God Account.

“She doesn’t think she’s just there to write Simon’s book, she thinks that maybe there’s a possibility the God Account sent her there for some reason. So she’s got to figure out what that reason might be,” she said.

Her suspicions prove correct on God Friended Me Season 2 Episode 1, “Joy,” when Cara tracks down Annie Keller (guest star Susan Misner) a friend of her mother’s who inspires Cara to become a journalist. When Cara and Annie make amends, Annie reveals that she isn’t the one sending Cara messages.

The God Account has been pulling strings for longer than they’ve ever known.

Beane filmed several scenes in Paris including shots along the Seine and at the bottom of the Eiffel Tower. God Friended Me creators Steven Lilien and Bryan Wynbrandt knew that in making this move, they needed the storyline to be significant to Cara’s character.

As a result, at the end of the arc, Cara will figure out why she’s meant to be there and it will change her as a person from what viewers saw last season.

“They didn’t want it to be one of those things where we go there just to shoot there and there’s no story backing it up. So what happens to Cara while she’s there, it sort of opens her eyes and helps her in her life, and in her relationships, and her job,” Beane said.

The scenes Beane filmed in Paris were shot over a couple of days and feature several iconic Paris locations.

“One thing that was really cool was shooting at the Louvre at like six in the morning when there was no one there, which, if you’ve ever gone to Paris, there’s never a time when no one is at the Louvre.”

God Friended Me Season 2 is also incorporating some LGBTQIA issues into the season. It was recently announced that Peppermint from RuPaul’s Drag Race would have a two-episode arc as a trans-pastor and that Ali (Javicia Leslie) would leave her father’s church to explore an LGBT-friendly congregation.

Beane talked a little about how the show handles these complex and divisive topics.

“I think with this new season and with the audience that we have already behind us, we’re able to take a little bit bigger steps and explore a little bit more than we might have been able to in Season 1,” Beane said.

She also discussed how the show is meant to be an inclusive place.

“I think it’s awesome that they’re doing this, and I’m excited and also nervous to see what the audience has to say, because it is a controversial topic. And I think for [the show’s creators] something that they always wanted from the beginning was to make the show feel like everyone was represented and that everyone can be different, but get along.”

Beane also talked about the show’s unique blend of religion and mystery. While God Friended Me does have a god-figure at its core with the God Account, there’s an element of mystery that attracts the audience.

“I think what attracts people to our show is that it’s this mystery that these people are trying to figure out,” Beane said.

While the topics the show deals with can get heavy, the humor in the show can make it a little more true to life.

“We can’t take life too seriously. The topics that we’re dealing with can get very heavy, but I think it’s ultimately realizing that you’re there for one another.”

Beane also shared a theory about who she thinks might be behind the God Account.

“I think it could be Ali, just because she’s always trying to get her dad and her brother to talk and mend this tear in their relationship. She’s a therapist so she wants to help people.”

God Friended Me has social media at the forefront of its plot and brings it back to the idea of human connection. Beane’s found that since doing the show she’s gotten several messages that show how it’s making an impact.

“I have received some DMs and comments from people who watch the show and a lot of it has been, ‘I watch this with my family’ or ‘My daughter is sick and this is something that we can enjoy together and it doesn’t make her feel sad,'” Beane said.

“Things like that, I think, are really special because of you realize that you, and the show that you’re working on, and the job that you’re doing is impacting people so dramatically and in such a positive way.”

You can catch Violett Beane on God Friended Me Season 2, airing Sundays at 8:30/7:30c on CBS.
