The InBetween Review: Monsters And Angels (Season 1 Episode 10)

Reviews, The InBetween

On the season finale of The InBetween Season 1 Episode 10, “Monsters And Angels” we learn for sure that Cassie isn’t the only person who can hear Ed Roven. And Mark Waterman isn’t the only person following his directions to kill.

It’s a month after The InBetween Season 1 Episode 9, “The Devil’s Refugee,” but Tom recognizes Calvin Hayes as the homeless man who tried to attack Cassie on surveillance footage when investigating Susie Lim’s murder.

The men can’t see him the way Cassie can, but her visions are getting slightly confusing because she keeps seeing Mark Waterman with a woman even though he’s actually still in jail.

Even though we know all of the people potentially involved in Susie Lim’s murder — we have seen Roven, Waterman, and Hayes on more than one episode each, it’s still so hard to follow.

Over-complicating cases has been a consistent problem for The InBetween all season and when it’s bad on an episode, it’s really bad.

It turns out Cassie is seeing visions of the future on this episode and Waterman’s girlfriend Debbie actually does help Waterman escape.

Susie Lim is killed because she is a teacher at the jail and hears part of the plan.

The show really underestimates the power of its heroine when they pack the murder case with so many extraneous people and connections.

Cassie has so much going on already. It’s the worst waste of screentime to have Tom and Damien have to tell viewers the specific details of the murder plan.

She has Bryon’s surgery to worry about, first of all. But there’s also the matter of banishing Ed to The Dark Place.

The show is underestimating its viewers too. We really don’t need to watch Cassie fight off Waterman in the flesh. We know she’s going to win.

It’s not my job to re-write the murder case plot. But there really is no need for it to take up nearly half of the episode, if not more time.

The threads we’ve been following all season involve Ed Roven and Bryon. That’s the meat of the episode that we care about.

So, it’s rather unfortunate that a simple Google search will tell you that Bryon’s type of tumor has a 90 percent survival rate. A little bit more tension there would’ve made me more emotionally attached to the episode.

It’s fun to see Abigail’s growth on the finale. She goes from the bitter, angry ghost we met on the pilot to the spirit who plays hide-and-seek with her sister and helps Cassie find everyone she needs to find to banish Ed to the Dark Place.

Millie is my favorite ghost of the season, and it is really satisfying to watch all of Ed’s victims get revenge on him for their deaths.

Cassie’s mother is someone who still remains a mystery. That would be less frustrating if viewers understood Cassie’s relationship with her.

On the pilot, Cassie’s mother is to blame for passing on daemons, like drinking too much, on her. But on the Season 1 finale, she’s a spirit that alludes Cassie — someone who Cassie wishes she could see. That relationship is more of a cliffhanger than the new spirit Cassie sees in the last few seconds of the episode.

In the end, I’m just not sure if Season 1 of The InBetween was strong enough for the show to continue.

  • InBetween is a great show!! It’s not hard to follow, at all. I can’t wait for season 2!!! My only complaint is that there were only 10 episodes in season 1.
