What Batwoman Is Bringing to The Arrowverse: Everything We Learned at San Diego Comic-Con

Batwoman, Features, San Diego Comic-Con

Kate Kane made her formal San Diego Comic-Con introduction to the Arrowverse, and though Batwoman herself, Ruby Rose, couldn’t attend, Executive Producers Sarah Schechter and Caroline Dries were present in Ballroom 20 to give fans a peek into the new part of the ‘verse.

Here are a few things we learned from Batwoman’s Pilot screening and panel and a few highlights:

Batman Villains Will Be Used…In a Way

It’s no secret that the Arrowverse, specifically Arrow, has used a few notable Batman villains that weren’t being utilized by the cinematic universe, from Deathstroke and The Count, to White Tiger and Deadshot.

But the executive producers assured fans that there will still be those big Gotham villains introduced in the series. It’s just a matter of finding a different angle on these well-known villains and finding out how they fit into Kate Kane’s story as she becomes Batwoman.

A “Hush” Is Coming

While discussing the very first villain Kate goes up against in the pilot (more on that as the premiere draws closer) and the kind of villains we should expect to see her face, the producers revealed that among the list of foes is Tommy Elliot, better known as Hush to Batman fans.

We’ll be meeting Elliot before the masks and wrapped faces, so that should be interesting to see how it all plays out.

Batwoman’s Fighting Style Sets Itself Apart from the Arrowverse

Something of note in the pilot is Kate’s fighting style, and it turns out it was a conscious choice on the part of the producers.

Caroline Dries: We wanted to make it feel like she was trained in the military.

Considering what we learn from Kate’s past, it all makes sense and does set her apart—fighting wise—from the other members of the Arrowverse.

Flashbacks Will Be Done Differently

The pilot’s flashbacks, much like those in Arrow, do a bit of set up in terms of relationship dynamics in the present, leading to some interesting set-up for one of Kate’s stories.

When asked about how the flashbacks will play out, the producing pair noted that they would work a little differently in terms of time. The flashbacks will not be sequentially from a specific period. Instead, these glimpses into the past will be picked from throughout Kate’s history.

Kate’s Relationships Are Very Much Difficult

Relationships in the Arrowverse are usually the opposite of smooth at the onset of any of our heroes’ journeys, and Kate is no exception.

From those with her family to those closest to her, viewers will have quite a bit to parse out as they follow Kate’s story, with one of those particular dynamics leaving me with many questions about what Kate does with that bit of information she learns.

Batwoman Isn’t Shying Away from Kate’s Sexuality

Schechter and Dries made it a point to explain that the comic book iteration is canonically lesbian and they won’t be shying away from it, but that they will also be exploring Kate beyond that aspect of her identity as well.

Kate’s Got a Friend in Kara

With Kate meeting Kara in the Elseworlds crossover, viewers were treated to some light, fun interaction between the pair. Producers said that they want to keep developing it, much like Oliver and Barry’s relationship has evolved through the years.

So, be on the lookout for that!
