Brooklyn Nine-Nine: Joe Lo Truglio and Terry Crews Discuss Playdates and Male Self-Care [Video]
The playful antics we get to witness on Brooklyn Nine-Nine work as well as they do because the precinct’s dads Charles Boyle, played by Joe Lo Truglio, and Terry Jeffords, played by Terry Crews, have everyone’s back.
The characters bring tenderhearted hilarity to Brooklyn Nine-Nine and also allow the show to explore the wild world of fatherhood.
Series stars Lo Truglio and Crews sat down with reporters during San Diego Comic-Con to talk about their real-life connections to their work on Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
Both Boyle and Jeffords have children on the show, but they’ve never gotten the kiddos together. The actors would love to see a playdate happen on an episode!

Lo Truglio likes the idea of adding a playdate to the officers’ competitive relationship.
“We have a lot of episodes where we’re kind of competitive about things when we were trying to figure out who’s the best dad. That would have been nice to end with a playdate,” he said.
Terry Crews joked that one of the young actresses who pays his daughter might not be interested in more screen time. “I have twin actresses and one loves it and one is like, I gotta go home. I want her to renegotiate her deal because she is not happy,” he playfully shared.Terry Jeffords passed his lieutenants exam AND won the heist on Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 6 Episode 16, “Cinco De Mayo.” But, Terry Crews isn’t afraid of any changes this might bring about.
Crews divulged, “One thing I love is that the world of Brooklyn Nine-Nine changes every episode.” Those changes help mark time in the story. “I love that Santiago went for her promotion so when you see her in her police uniform, you know where we are,” he continued
“That’s life,” Crews concluded.
The show has had a litany of incredible guest stars over its six seasons.

Who would Terry Crews and Joe Lo Truglio love to see come back, even as a different character? Crews said, “Sean Astin.” Lo Truglio agreed and added, “Bill Hader!”
When asked if there is anything in their real lives that the pair love as deeply and passionately as Boyle loves Jake and Terry loves yogurt, Truglio said, “My passion for doing what I do is right there. I love it. I’ve been lucky and blessed to get this far, to be able to work with the amount of people that I have. I can’t think of anything else I’d want to do.”
Even though acting isn’t a person, he admitted, “I relate that way. I feel like I want to grab what I do and hug it.”
Crews explained what it is about yogurt that his character loves. “Terry loves yogurt because it’s his respite. It’s his time.”

“I have those moments, I do” Crews shared. “Yes, it has been with yogurt definitely. but it’s also been times at the gym, times where it’s me time,” he said hugging himself. He moved the conversation back to Terry Jeffords, saying “He’s all about self-care.”
Crews assertively summarized his character’s love of yogurt saying, “[it] totally symbolizes male self-care.”
The comedic dynamic between the two actors clearly contributes to their characters natural humor on the show. The pair had the reporters laughing the whole time.
We can’t wait to see how these two will continue their hilarious and lovely journey on Brooklyn Nine-Nine on Season 7!
