mixed-ish: Get a First Look at the ‘black-ish’ Spinoff
First is was black-ish, then it was grown-ish, and now ABC is delivering its third series about Johnson family, mixed-ish. This time the story centers on the family matriarch, Bow, looking back to her pre-teen years growing up in a mixed-race family in the 80s.
Complicating matters even more, the series picks up right as the peaceful commune her family had been living with is raided forcing them to move to a suburb in Texas.
Completely naive of the cultural and societal dynamics of high school, let alone race in America, Bow, and her siblings are in for quite the shock as they learn to navigate living in this new world.

Staring in the new comedy are Arica Himmel as Bow Johnson, Tika Sumpter as Alicia Johnson, Gary Cole as Harrison Johnson, Christina Anthony as Denise, Mykal-Michelle Harris as Santamonica Johnson and Ethan Childress as Johan Johnson.
The series is being produced by Tracee Ellis Ross, along with Randall Winston, Artists First (Brian Dobbins), Cinema Gypsy (Laurence Fishburne and Helen Sugland), Anthony Anderson, and series writers Peter Saji and Kenya Barris at ABC Studios. Anton Cropper directed the pilot.
mixed-ish premieres September 24th at 8/9c on ABC

Official Synopsis: In mixed-ish, Rainbow Johnson recounts her experience growing up in a mixed-race family in the ’80s and the constant dilemmas they had to face over whether to assimilate or stay true to themselves. Bow’s parents Paul and Alicia decide to move from a hippie commune to the suburbs to better provide for their family. As her parents struggle with the challenges of their new life, Bow and her siblings navigate a mainstream school in which they’re perceived as neither black nor white. This family’s experiences illuminate the challenges of finding one’s own identity when the rest of the world can’t decide where you belong.
