Lucifer Review: Who Are You (Season 4 Episodes 4-5)
Lucifer continues to be strong in Lucifer Season 4 Episodes 4 and 5, “All About Eve,” and “Expire Erect.” These are the episodes in which we are introduced to newcomer Inbar Lavi as Eve, try to figure out what Deckerstar’s dynamic is and deal with Lucifer trying to be the devil.
We leave off on Lucifer Season 4 Episodes 1-3, with Lucifer and Chloe at odds with one another. Lucifer is hurt that she can’t accept him and Chloe is trying her hardest to get past his devil face. For all intents and purposes, they have broken up.

Lucier Season 4 Episode 4:
This episode is fittingly called “All About Eve: because Eve is definitely the central point. We also get to check in with Chloe and Linda about their particular anxieties. But first, let’s talk about Eve, shall we?
Eve is a very interesting character so far; She’s a human woman who snuck out of heaven looking for thrills — and for her first love. Inbar Lavi portrays her with such an innocence and wonder that it’s hard not to feel for her.
Eve: I always thought that something was missing…People always forget I didn’t choose Adam, I was created for him.
The last time she felt like herself was when she was with Lucifer so she’s in love with the idea of him. It just so happens she comes at a moment when Lucifer needs someone to love him for who he is. He sees Chloe’s actions as rejection and is hurting badly because of it.
It makes sense that they would be drawn to each other.
The other major plot-point of the episode is Linda’s impending motherhood. It is hard enough learning you’ll be a mother but being a mother to a celestial baby? That’s a kicker.
Linda: Not to mention I have a truly supernatural support team.
There’s a lot of hilarity involved in the plot line (Maze and Amenadiel at the appointment) but there’s also a lot of heart. It’s a line that Lucifer as show toes well. Linda’s freak out is completely understandable. After all wouldn’t you freak out if your son is a first in both human and angel history?

Linda Martin is one of the foundations of the show and it’s great when we get to see Rachael Harris really bring her all to a performance. Throughout the episode, she is terrified of what having an angel baby might mean but it’s not till the scene with Chloe that we see it all click.
It’s a beautiful scene because Chloe gets some reassurance that there’s no right way to react to knowing what they know. Then we get to see Linda come to the wonderful realization that she wouldn’t change any of it.
Linda Martin: With all the bad comes a lot of good. I got a best out of this. And the most fascinating patient in the world. And this baby? Who saw that coming? I guess as freaked out as I am? I’m really looking forward to being a mom and meeting my son. Wings and all.
Linda’s realization is one of the things that pushes Chloe to realize that devil face and all she’d rather have Lucifer in her life than continue on without him.
Chloe Decker: I’d rather have him in my life than not.
Of course, as this is a television show, her own realization comes a bit too late.
Lucifer Season 4 Episode 5:
In the ongoing saga of Lucifer and Chloe being at odds yet not wanting to be apart is still going strong this episode. The episode is all about getting closure for Lucifer and Chloe, as Lucifer thinks this will let him move on with Eve.
As the episode goes on, we realize that the last thing either of them wants is closure. Lucifer keeps trying to make the case go longer and Chloe just stares wistfully after him. I hate when writers go for miscommunication as a trope, but for some reason, it works here.
Neither of them feels like they have the guts to be the one to speak up first. They are at an impasse. This is usually when big stuff goes down which is exactly what happens. In this case, it’s a bomb in Lux and Lucifer gets shot.
Every scene with Eve tells us a little more about who she is. I love that she mentions Charlotte and Abel as reasons for why she doesn’t hold Cain’s death against Lucifer.
Amenadiel: Because he killed Cain, Eve. your son.
Eve: You know, I met Charlotte Richards on my way out of heaven. She was lovely. Same as my sweet and gentle Abel. Pretty sure he heard what was coming for him.
The episode actually does a really good job of bringing Eve into the fold as they have her bond with both Ella and Chloe. It also gives us a special insight into Lucifer’s relationships with both Ella and Chloe.

After all, Eve has been back a week and she already knows all about them. I’m glad this season is focusing on both the friendship between Ella and Chloe and the friendship between Lucifer and Ella.
Eve: I’ve been dying to meet you since Lucifer told me how amazing you are.
I don’t really consider Eve, Lucifer, and Chloe a love triangle but if it is; this is the proper way to do it. We see that Chloe and Eve respect each other. They are both just trying their best. We get to see a lot of great moments between Lavi and Lauren German as they both fight to save Lucifer.
Eve: From what Lucifer has told me, you are the smartest, most capable, most resourceful person he’s ever known.
Lucifer spends all episode wanting to be near to Chloe but hurting because he thinks she doesn’t accept him. It takes a pep talk from a drugged up Ella to bring it all in perspective. Which of course culminates in the scene in which Chloe protects Lucifer from a bomb about to go off.
We’ve seen Lucifer risk his life multiple times for Chloe, now we get to see Chloe risk her life for Lucifer.
Additional thoughts:
- Ella should kiss more girls, just saying.
- I love the Carl’s Jr shout-out on Episode 5, it is a nice gesture. For those that don’t know Carl’s Jr was very supportive during the #SaveLucifer campaign.
- The Eve costume is gorgeous.
- The scene between Amenadiel and Chloe where they talk about her dad is one of the best in the season. It is some spectacular acting from DB Woodside and Lauren German. The way her face changes when he realizes what he means is heartwarming. All Chloe ever wanted is to make her dad proud, and now she has proof that she has.
- I really love the focus on the platonic friendships this season. We have Ella/Lucifer, Amenadiel and Chloe, Maze and Linda, Amenadiel and Lucifer, and Ella and Chloe. This show gives importance to the platonic, the familiar and the romantic relationships.
