Grey's Anatomy - Season 15 Episode 24 - Drawn to the Blood

Grey’s Anatomy Review: Drawn to the Blood (Season 15 Episode 24)

Grey's Anatomy, Reviews

For Grey’s Anatomy’s penultimate episode of the season, we’d expect nothing short of intense drama, and that’s exactly what Grey’s Anatomy Season 15 Episode 24, “Drawn to the Blood,” delivers.

It does so in a few ways that aren’t that hard to see coming, but it does so with some really powerful emotional moments.

Much of the episode is centered on where relationships stand, which, considering this season was billed as the season of love, feels like an appropriate way to head into the season finale.

For Meredith and DeLuca, it’s Meredith figuring out where she stands now that DeLuca has told her he loves her. And as she explains to Jo, it’s not just that she’s running scared or worried about making a commitment. The last person she said that to was Derek.

Meredith staying with Jo isn’t about her avoidance, though, at least not entirely. It’s more about her actual concern for Jo, which in itself is this great moment of evolution for their relationship, which I’ve really enjoyed watching grow. Part of that is because Alex loves her, but Meredith has been able to be a mentor and a friend to her in some important ways.

And in bringing up another thread from an early season, which is something I continue to note that Grey’s is doing well lately, Meredith tells Jo about her near-drowning and how she was willing to give up in that moment.

Taking Jo to the hospital to talk to Bailey is the right move, but this timing couldn’t be worse. It is actually heartbreaking that the meeting Bailey and Catherine are so seriously involved in is about Meredith’s insurance fraud.

More heartbreaking is that DeLuca is willing to sacrifice his own career to keep Meredith out of trouble.

It’s a really beautiful act of love and it speaks volumes about their relationship. It’s not just about her, either. He’s doing it so she won’t be taken from her children. Maybe it all feels a little naive, but it’s emotional as hell to watch him reveal what he’s said while Meredith is locked in that chamber unable to get out and stop him.

The frustration I have with this story comes from Meredith’s decision on Grey’s Anatomy Season 15 Episode 23 in the first place. It seems there should have been other ways she could have helped, especially considering her status with the hospital. There would have bound to have been something else, somehow, other than actual insurance fraud, and somehow that impulsive move felt a little out of character for her.

All that aside, what’s done is done, and that’s just one cliffhanger that we’re left with on this episode.

Another is the donor who flies in to help Gus, only she’s terrified of getting off the plane and going to the hospital. She’s agoraphobic and even though she desperately does want to save this boy, she’s terrified someone bad will happen to her in the process.

If you ever needed a lesson in foreshadowing, well, this is it. Because that’s some serious foreshadowing. No way after all that fear was she actually going to make it to the hospital easily.

The story with Gus has already been an intriguing one, and I really appreciate when the show has patients that stick around for several episodes. That in-depth look at their care and the attachment we get to them is important. We’ve gotten that connection now with Gus and with his family.

His poor dad. Falling on those legos was one thing, but goodness.

Another cliffhanger is, of course, Teddy in labor. And naturally, she’s with Amelia when it happens, and they’re going to have trouble getting to the hospital too. That brings me back to this idea that the episode is focused on relationships and where they stand. The reason Teddy is with Amelia is because she was looking for Owen — looking to tell him she loved him, and hoping to do that before her baby is born.

Grey's Anatomy Teddy Amelia

Owen has already made a decision to tell someone he loves them, and it could certainly be the case that that’s Teddy. If that’s where this is supposed to head, I do hope they get their chance.

As for Amelia, she seems pretty well resigned to it. Her attitude is really more, “yeah, about time,” when Teddy tells her she’s there for Owen. But she has to make her own decision, and hers is about Link, who is no longer good with just being “pain management.”

I’d love to see Amelia in a happy relationship. And for that matter, I’d love to see Link in one.

Jackson and Maggie’s camping trip is a nice detail too, and it solidifies some things about their own relationship. Namely, that maybe they could have their different interests and that would be just fine.

Camping almost could have been Maggie’s thing. Almost.

Overall, it’s a good lead in to the season finale. The highlight of the episode is certainly the bonding between Jo and Meredith, which is something I wouldn’t mind seeing even more of moving forward.
