DC’s Legends of Tomorrow Review: Seance and Sensibility (Season 4 Episode 11)

Legends of Tomorrow, Reviews

Legends of Tomorrow Season 4 Episode 11, “Seance and Sensibility,” gets dropped into the world of Jane Austen as the legends hunt down the Hindu God of Love.

“Seance and Sensibility” is perhaps the first episode since coming back from hiatus that feels like the series is operating on all cylinders, while also dealing with a lot of the necessary place-setting for the remaining episodes of the season.

This is an episode that exemplifies a lot of what the show does best: fusing the silly with the serious.

While on one side of the show, we have the rather grim plot of Hank’s funeral and Nate coming to terms with the death of his father, plus a seance, the other side of the show has sex dreams, Jane Austen, and a Bollywood musical number.

Ultimately, it’s these moments of mild insanity that truly makes “Seance and Sensibility” work. Whether that is everyone on the Waverider experiencing vivid fantasies or Nate discovering Hank’s insane masterplan of what he’s planning on doing with the magical creatures, it all just works remarkably well.

If nothing else, this series has a purely deft ability of how to flip between tones that still mesh together.

On top of that, it understands that you don’t need to have one without the other. It can have a scene like Mona in full Wolfie-mode confronting Jane Austen about her views of love and have that simultaneously be emotionally resonant and fully ridiculous.

Legends of Tomorrow gets that there is comedy in drama and vice-versa.

The good thing about “Seance and Sensibility” is that this is probably the last episode of the season that will have to do any amount of setup for the remaining episodes. The rest can now bask a bit in its tomfoolery and perhaps enjoy itself until it gets to the climax of this season.

What it’s building up here isn’t necessarily that great, either, with things like Constantine realizing that the demon is Neron and is possessing his boyfriend or having a potential divide between Ray and Nate over Norah. These are fine, but a bit standard as far as the show normally goes. We’ll be interested to see how it deals with this going forward.

“Seance and Sensibility” is largely a nice return to the way that we’re usually familiar with the series.

Some Stray Thoughts:

  • Sara saying “Ava” during her sex dream is A+.
  • Hank’s voice coming out Mick’s mouth is so weird, and I love it.
  • Everyone making fun of Zari over Nate is basically everything I needed out of that plotline.
  • Hank wanted to train the magical creatures to work at a theme park and I have many logistical questions over this.

Drew has an ongoing, borderline unhealthy obsession with pop culture, but with television in particular. When he's not aggressively trying to get out of a perpetual state of catching up, he can be found passionately defending the ending of Lost.
