Chicago Med Review: Lesser of Two Evils (Season 4 Episode 6)

Chicago Med, Reviews

A long-held family secret, a joint party, and a far too familiar and realistic horror story fill Chicago Med Season 4 Episode 6, “Lesser of Two Evils,” with engaging and frustrating stories.

The way that Daria and her situation is treated feels vastly different from the way that the family on Chicago Med Season 4 Episode 4, “Backed Against The Wall,” was addressed.

Both stories speak to different aspects of immigration. While Gwen and Lanik infuriatingly got in the way of potential help back in “Backed Against The Wall,” the pair seem to be otherwise occupied this time around.

Sharon’s reaction to hearing about what Natalie and Will pulled to help get Daria away from her abusive husband definitely feels appropriate given her role, and it’s not as extreme as Gwen’s reaction probably would have been.

At the end of it all, it’s heartwarming to see that Daria gets a chance to stay and make a life for herself away from the abuse.

Dr. Lanik continues to be a terrible person and an even worse teacher as he endlessly berates and belittles med student Derek. It’s infuriating to see that humiliation takes precedence over an emergency situation like the one that Derek, Lanik, and Connor deal with during this installment.

It’s understandable that they need to be able to handle high-risk situations, but it feels like Lanik’s method is so very far off. He comes off as a worse version of my first impression of ER’s Dr. Romano.

Their arc throughout the hour feels like a do and don’t in terms of how to practice medicine ethically. This is especially the case in moments like the end of the hour, when Connor honestly gives Derek advice about dealing with the first loss of a patient and where a doctor’s priorities lie when on the job.

Elsewhere, Ethan and April’s patient unknowingly being at the center of a long-held family secret leads to some heartbreaking results for everyone involved.

It’s an ethically questionable situation borne out of the desire to protect a young child.

Hearing Gabby’s “adopted” parents explain the situation and Alyssa’s desire to thank them for protecting her daughter, it becomes clear that it’s one of those situations where operating in the gray (despite the blatant law-breaking) is necessary.

It’s sad to see how confused Gabby is by it all and how she deals with this big family secret by lashing out at her biological mother. It makes you wonder how those relationships will change and if they’ll ever be repaired.

Random Thoughts:

  • Ethan attempting to reconcile with his sister is sweet, but wow that moving news feels like a swift gut punch.
  • Lanik remains the worst.
  • I’ll admit it: Seeing everyone in costume is adorable.

So, what did you think of this episode of Chicago Med? Anyone else want to see more of the Derek and Connor mentoring relationship? Who else thinks Will is going to go against Jay’s advice? And who will find out the truth first: Natalie or Ray Burke?
