Killjoys Review: It Takes a Pillage (Season 4 Episode 8)

Killjoys, Reviews

On Killjoys Season 4 Episode 8, “It Takes a Pillage,” which was written by Derek Robertson, the Jaqobis go home, which leads to some heartwarming moments and reminders as to why they left in the first place. It’s a fun trip full of stories, fighting, and Hullen, of course.

Jaq’s presence has really allowed for Johnny and D’av to re-examine their own upbringing, as well as D’av’s ability to be a good father. Jaq has grounded the story in a fantastic way, and anytime we get to spend time focusing on the Jaqobis is fine by me.

Watching D’av build his bond with Jaq has been amazing; it’s great that we get to see some solo scenes on “It Takes a Pillage” where it is just the two of them.

Papa Jaqobis: He can’t grow up in a bubble.

D’av: He’s not in a bubble!

Jaq: I’m in a sand suit!

D’av: Okay, bad timing.

Despite D’av’s fears, he has really settled into the dad role nicely. He’s nothing like his father, as the hour more than proves. The hug the two of them share is beyond sweet.

As sad as it will be to see Jaq leave, hopefully this means we will get to see him and Delle Seyah, wherever she is. We need more royalty lessons, and Jaq needs to bond with his surrogate mom.

Johnny’s ex-girlfriend, Charlie, is suspicious from the very moment she enters the bunker. Her timing is too suspect, especially considering the silica storm that’s going on.

It’s no surprise when she turns Jaq in to the Hullen. Charlie’s presence and her betrayal allow us (and Johnny) to see what Johnny’s life could have been like if he stayed with her and stayed on that planet.

At first, Charlie appears to be doing well. She’s got the family and the job as Sheriff. It’s a respectable life, and she has the family that Johnny doesn’t.

But, Charlie will apparently do anything, even sell out a child, if it means getting money. So, she may have a good life on paper, but her heart’s missing. And that’s one thing that Johnny definitely isn’t lacking.

Dutch: Take it apart how?

Zeph: A centrifuge, obviously.

Dutch: Right, yeah, obviously. Do I have one of those?

Zeph: Hmmm there. Centrifugal force is how we’ll separate components from the spore base like how a salad spinner pulls water away from…salad.

Dutch: How you toss your salad is between you and Pip…okay we need to work on your dirty joke game. That would have killed with Johnny.

Is anyone else surprised that everyone expected Johnny to be the first to settle down and have kids? The thief we’ve come to know and love never seemed like the type — he’s too busy chasing adventure. It’s an interesting insight into Johnny’s character when he was younger.

“It Takes a Pillage” highlights how far D’av and Johnny have come since leaving home. Everything they have been through has made them better people.

Zeph and Dutch continue to be absolutely delightful.

Zeph: “I get that risking everything for everyone is what you do, but literally shutting out the people that care about you when all they are trying to do is save your life is not badass!”

Their friendship is a personal favorite, and it’s especially intriguing to see them interact while Dutch is spiraling a bit. It allows us to explore a different side of their friendship.

Zeph and Dutch are able to give the other a much-needed pep talk. There’s really no substitute for girl talk.
