10 Reasons We’re Glad ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ Was Renewed For Season 6

Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Lists
7. Recurring Rivals

There is nothing like a good grudge to keep viewers invested in a show.

For Brooklyn Nine-Nine, the detectives’ grudges towards old foes are what silicified the first season’s success. Players like Doug Judy – The Pontiac Bandit, The Vulture, and Fire Marshall Boone bring out the competitive side of Jake and his coworkers for some epic battles of wit and pranking.

Craig Robinson’s portrayal of Doug Judy stands out in particular when you think of fan-favorite guest stars. His long-standing rivalry with Jake constantly delves into friendship fueled shenanigans. It is this bond with Jake that has made his appearances a staple of the series.

It’s not really Brooklyn Nine-Nine unless Jake and Doug Judy reunite once a season to solve crime together. And we will never get tired of seeing Jake get portrayed by the criminal every single time those two team up.

But sometimes the worst kinds of people aren’t criminals at all. They are your coworkers.

Not everything is light and breezy when it comes to solving crimes for the 99th precinct, especially when a certain detective named Keith Pembroke from Special Crimes swoops in and steals their cases that are 99% solved — hence his nickname The Vulture.

His sneaky ways have led the nine-nine to take matters into their own hands and craft elaborate plans to hold him off until they can close their cases.

The Vulture is truly the worst and he knows it. His back and forth with everyone in the 99th precinct has led to some truly bizarre but hilarious situations ranging from The Vulture briefly becoming Captain to him stealing Jake and Amy’s wedding venue. He is truly the best at being the worst and as fans, we can’t help but hope The Vulture will keep returning to steal the spotlight.

There is no rivalry quite like the one between the NYPD and the FDNY, a rivalry Jake and Fire Marshall Boone gladly contribute to with petty arguments and pranks over which occupation is better.

They still maintain an odd friendship though and share a bond over their absent fathers. Boone hasn’t made too many appearances on the show and Brooklyn Nine-Nine could definitely benefit from another competitive game of football between the fire station and the nine-nine.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine knows how to take guest stars to the next level with characters that are guaranteed to bring out the competitive and petty nature of everyone in the precinct. Now if only we could get an episode with Doug Judy, The Vulture, and Boone teaming up to antagonize Jake. That would be noice.

8. Jake and Amy

Despite Jake not taking enough seriously and Amy taking too much seriously when the two finally started dating it just seems right.

Jake and Amy truly bring out the best in each other and reflect a realistic couple where dramatic fights come rarely and the teasing is constant. Amy and Jake have this unspoken synchronicity between one another that is always so comforting and fun as viewers to watch.

Amy knows that when Jake ends up in a sewer he’s going to talk about the ninja turtles and Jake knows Amy just pretends to like Die-Hard for his benefit. Jake starts reading the Harry Potter books so he can find common interests with Amy and Amy asks for their wedding cake to be in the shape of Nakatomi Tower just to make Jake happy.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine: HalloVeen (Season 5 Episode 4)

There is no fighting over whose interests are more important or how a Die-Hard cake is tacky for a wedding ceremony. Jake and Amy understand each other in an unproblematic way and only look to make the other happier in the relationship — never unhappy.

The fact that Jake knew he wanted to marry Amy when she found a spelling error in a crossword puzzle is just too adorable. Know what’s even more adorable? Surprising her with an elaborate Halloween heist proposal no one would ever see coming.

And the best part of Jake and Amy’s relationship is that it is a total mess all the time. The way they get together is messy and how they get married is messy, but the two embrace the chaotic mess their lives can be and come out of it stronger together.

Thankfully their wedding is not the end, as previously thought. We get to see what our two loveable goofballs have in store for us as husband and wife next season, and I personally can not wait!

9. More Captain Raymond Holt

BROOKLYN NINE-NINE: Andre Braugher in the “The Venue” episode of BROOKLYN NINE-NINE CR: John P. Fleenor/FOX

Of course, this man deserves to be his own reason on this list.

Sure, he is a strong character that represents both the LGBTQ and African-American community, but Captain Holt is so much more. The severity in which he refuses to show any emotions often results in some of the most robotic and toneless jokes you’ll ever hear but it is his dryness that ultimately makes his interactions so humorous.

Captain Holt is at his funniest when he is surprising the viewers — this can come in the form of him showing actual emotion or bantering with Jake over one of the detective’s childish habits.

He also recognizes that Jake has lacked a strong fatherly figure and steps up to help him mature as a person. Holt is a great leader with a moral compass that reassures not only his coworkers but us as well.

The introduction of Holt’s husband, Kevin, and his dog, Cheddar has made him a comedic character worth investing in an since the beginning.

It is Captain Holt’s ability to create chemistry with other characters despite not actually showing any emotions that makes him central to the success of this show.

10. It’s a Good Pick-Me-Up

If Brooklyn Nine-Nine has given us anything to be grateful for, it is a happy outcome to every difficult situation. This is not something we get to see on television too often with somber shows like 13 Reasons Why and The Handmaid’s Tale which never really give the viewer the option to feel hopeful. Not that somber is bad, but these days viewers could use a little pick-me-up and Brooklyn Nine-Nine is the perfect medicine for that.

This show is a comforting breather from the darkness surrounding us in the media and in pop culture right now.

The jokes are always in good fun and never feel like they cross a line as being too insulting. Brooklyn Nine-Nine might be a workplace comedy, but there’s no way there is another place in the world as driven by positivity, fun, compassion as the 99th precinct is.

Everyone just understands each other and looks for the best in each other — never the worst. If there’s a problem between coworkers they fix it and if another coworker is going through something they are there for them. In turn, Brooklyn Nine-Nine is there for us and reminds viewers of all the good that can come from building friendships like these.

If you are feeling anxious or depressed watch Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Not only is the lack of negativity refreshing, it is calming. The jokes are so well crafted and witty that even on your worst days this show will guarantee a good laugh. I’m not saying watching television can solve all your problems but watching this show does help significantly.
