Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce Series Finale Review: Rule #1 Keep the Toast Short (Season 5 Episode 6)
Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce Series 5 Episode 6, “Rule #1: Keep the Toast Short,” keeps you on your toes until the very last second where you get hit over the head with a bucket load of feels.
The episode is beautifully executed.
This is easily one of the most satisfying finales out there. It has angst; it has heart-wrenching moments; it has love; it has Jo’s shameless bluntness; it has it all!
You go on a roller coaster ride, where you’re looking at the time thinking “there is only 15 minutes left, and no one is remotely close to having their shit fixed. How is this going to happen?!” Then Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce knocks your socks off with that final sequence.
Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce is notorious for cramming a lot of information into a single episode.
The series finale is no different; with five girlfriends needing their stories wrapped up — as well as a handful of extras who came and left their marks on these women over the years — a lot has to go down during the 40-minute episode.
In hindsight, a time jump is the only logical way that they could have wrapped up everything with a happily ever after, so to speak. However, the time jump still blows your mind because this is one of the smoothest time jumps I’ve ever seen.
Time jumping between the grad parties is ingenious. Abby starts walking and wham! We cut to an identical walk but the spirit is so different — so is her dress and the cake. This is mind-boggling for a moment until you realize what’s going on.
The decision to do this is very smart. Everyone’s gets their story-lines wrapped up in a pretty bow, and the audience gets to see where each girlfriend is now, and what is their ever after.
Each of their endings is appropriate for their character’s growth, and you can see a clear difference in how they’ve grown and developed over the seasons. Character growth is vital for any show that wants to be remembered as one of the greats.
Previously, I stated that Delia’s storyline this season (wanting to become a mommy) wasn’t my favorite. The circumstances around her pregnancy made it even worse, BUT I take it all back.
Seeing her with a baby is literally the cutest thing ever, and even though it was only for a moment, that one scene was heartwarming.
Each of the girlfriends went through hell and came back stronger and smarter. They all ended up in good places, and their futures post-finale look bright.
The idea that life can through you the curviest of curve balls when you least expect it but you can power through and hit it out of the park in the end is so essential.
Everyone goes through hard times. There are times when you feel like giving up. Life isn’t always fair. But at the end of the day, the prettiest rainbows always come after the worst storms.
You have to keep fighting, keep loving, and keep living to see the rainbow.
The life messages that come out of this show are going to be the legacy of Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce.
Honorary shout outs: the fashion over the years is divine and all thanks to the talent of Cynthia Summers. She brought out the personality in each of the ladies through their clothing choices stunningly.
Scott is back! He’s now engaged and no longer an option for Jo, but he did grace our screens one more time before the fade out.
Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce, thank you for an intense and crazy ride these last five seasons. We’ve laughed; we’ve cried; we’ve held on to our seats as our favorite ladies were put through the ringer.
In the words of Abby, “Here’s to love.” The show may be over, but the memories will live on.
Also, there’s always Netflix for those rewatches!

yeahh…that show sucked. Your “hero” Abby is the worst mother and friend. The finale was clearly written in five minutes by writers who realized they couldn’t figure out any cohesive storyline for any of their characters.
best ending ever!!!!
I hate Abby.. she sucks and is the worst actress ever
The finale sucked! Abby is so selfish and horrible. The way they dressed Barbara?! Ugh! Poor thing.
