15 Favorite TV Episodes from 2018 (So Far)

Atlanta, Black Lightning, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Fear the Walking Dead, Grey's Anatomy, Jane the Virgin, Lists, New Girl, One Day at a Time, Supernatural, The 100, The Americans, The Good Place, This is Us, Timeless
7. Fear the Walking Dead Season 4 Episode 5: “Laura”

Fear the Walking Dead "What's Your Story?" (Season 4 Episode 1)

Fear the Walking Dead has undergone a facelift in Season 4, adding several new characters and losing more than one of the old characters.

Though originally skeptical of some of the new characters, I quickly warmed to both John Dorie and Naomi/Laura/June after watching “Laura,” which is a sweet, standalone love story. Garret Dillahunt and Jenna Elfman were at the top of their game and gave long-time fans a rare treat.

8. The 100 Season 5 Episode 1: “Eden”

The 100 -- "Eden"

Until watching The 100 Season 5 Episode 1, “Eden,” I had always wondered whether or not one actress could carry a show. I no longer wonder, because this episode proved that Eliza Taylor needs no one’s support to perform a compelling piece of television.

Though The 100 Season 5 is littered with excellent episodes, “Eden” kicks the season off strong, and makes for one of the best episodes to air this year.

9. Brockmire Season 2 Episode 6: “Broadcasters Jinx”

Like many of the other shows listed, you can pick any episode of Brockmire and have it easily fit on any best episodes list.

“Broadcasters Jinx” gets Jim mixed up in clumsily trying to defend his friend and learning a hard lesson about racism in America, but ultimately choosing his friends over his dream. Brockmire is an overall excellent show, and “Broadcasters Jinx” is a standout.

If you’re not watching Brockmire, get on it!

10. This Is Us Season 2 Episode 14: “Super Bowl Sunday”

Since day one, This is Us fans had been clamoring for answers on Jack’s death. We all knew that he died when the “triplets” were teenagers, but the details remained under wraps for some time. After it finally came, it was exactly the kind of emotional gut punch that fans expected.

This is Us has been known to play fast and loose with twists, and that of course was no exception in This is Us Season 2 Episode 14, “Superbowl Sunday.” Of course, this one may have been the most heartbreaking in the show’s history.

We’ve all been there, right?

The status quo of a show has changed over a year or so and we’ve finally accepted it, so even people who shipped Jane and Michael had started to move on. But like any good TV show, Jane the Virgin Season 4 Episode 17, “Chapter Eighty-One,” upended everything with a new twist. (Spoilers ahead!)

Yep. Michael is alive. This reveal says something larger about the show being fearless and ready to tackle huge curveballs, and that’s why “Chapter Eighty-One” lands on this year’s best episodes list.

12. Grey’s Anatomy Season 14 Episode 10: “Personal Jesus”

Grey’s Anatomy, after 14 years, proved that it still tells compelling stories when “Personal Jesus” aired earlier this year.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 14 Episode 10, “Personal Jesus,” explores both biases by police and the ever-mounting racial tensions in 2018, as well as the Black Lives Matter movement and what it truly means. Episodes like this are rare but ever important in our increasingly tense times.

Also, “Personal Jesus” was a nice little showcase for long-time cast member Sarah Drew, who will not be returning to the show next season.
