Reviews, Younger

Younger Season 5 Episode 6, “Sex, Liza and Rock & Roll,” brings the humor and emotion in equal measure marking a turning point for Charles and Liza.

It also brings classic Younger shenanigans and tests the limits of Kelsey’s new love triangle.

Getting a manuscript from the iconic 80s rocker, Chrissy Hart proves harder than anticipated, sending Charles and Liza to a remote location in one of the most fun romance tropes.

Having these two go out apart from the group to a remote location where their guards are both down gives them a chance to address their feelings with each other with very little outside influence.

The atmosphere of Chrissy’s allows Charles and Liza to get drunk and the wall they’ve built between themselves begins to crumble. The feelings that have developed between these two are still very present and when they can see past the lie, they can each see the person they fell in love with.

Liza is open and honest about what she feels, but Charles isn’t quite ready to trust her again. But as they each hesitate on either side of her bedroom door, it’s clear that they’re on the verge of something.

Liza goes one step further and actually follows through on the mission she and Charles set out to accomplish. Charles running away is understandable to an extent, but you can only run for so long.

Seeing Liza walk in and drop the manuscript on Charles’ desk is easily one of the most satisfying moments so far of Younger Season 5.

Charles: How did you get this?

Liza: I didn’t run away.

Liza relates to Chrissy in a real and important way as herself, as someone with all of the experience of a 40-year-old woman. She’s gone above and beyond to prove her worth at the company, and part of why she’s as good as she is is because of her age.

Meanwhile, Kelsey spirals further into her developing love triangle with Jake and Zane. The more time she spends with each man, the more attracted to both of them she becomes both physically and emotionally.

Zane: You want someone who isn’t intimidated by your intelligence…someone who challenges you, but also makes you happy.

Kelsey hasn’t always had the best taste in men, and while she’s no stranger to being the other woman, she’s also never juggled two relationships at once. Lauren celebrates her dabble into polyamory, but Kelsey still feels out of her depth.

I find myself going back and forth on who I like best for her, and I’m aggressively reminded that Younger does love triangles better than any other show. This week I’m on Team Zane because I think he understands Kelsey more deeply than Jake does, but something about Jake seems a little less complicated.

There’s nothing to say that Kelsey has to be exclusive with either of these men, she hasn’t promised either of them more than what she’s given them. But because of their precarious position with work, Kelsey needs to tread very carefully so as to not do anything that would jeopardize Jake’s book and his association with Millineal.

Kelsey isn’t the only one getting love though, the relationship between Diana and Enzo has become serious enough that she’s not only spending the night at his place but meeting his mother!

I’m really happy to see Diana in a healthy and positive relationship with someone out of her comfort zone. Enzo is good to her and he makes her feel good.

After watching her be emotionally manipulated for the entirety of her previous relationship, it’s just really satisfying to see Diana get to have something good in her life.

OTHER THOUGHTS:

  • Maggie is finally getting noticed on a higher level as well as getting even more folded into Liza’s work life. It’s what she deserves!
  • Diana speaking Italian to Enzo’s mom is a power move I support.
  • Josh obviously still has it bad for Liza, and he’s definitely still harboring some residual jealousy over her feelings for Charles. Will Josh try to get her back or will he let her explore whatever is brewing between her and Charles?
  • I love the way Younger is portraying Lauren’s sexuality. She’s queer and it’s just a characteristic about her that blends perfectly into the rest of who she is and her place in the story. Keep it up!

  • The one moment Liza is in the Meatpacking Distrcit, the next she is on Shelter Island. Did she get there by Concord? Did Elon Musk built her a hyperloop? Darren Star does not know the LI expressway?
