Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce Review: Rule #97 It Takes Two to Stab Yourself in the Butt (Season 5 Episode 3)
Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce Season 5 Episode 3, “Rule #97: It Takes Two to Stab Yourself in the Butt,” is flooded with love triangles upon love triangles.
Can an episode have too many? When the regular cast consists of five people, yes, they can have too many love triangles.
Love triangles are the epitome of drama. They have a way of bringing out the ugly in characters while spiking jealousy and cattiness; mix in an ex, and all hell is about to break loose.
But when a show has multiple love triangles, and more than one involves an ex-spouse causing trouble (intentionally or not), things get a little redundant.

This episode consists of:
- Abby/Mike/Mike’s ex-wife Colette
- Barbara/Barb’s ex-husband Leon/Patricia (Leon’s wife/Barb’s sister)
- Jo/Albert/Jo’s ex-husband Frumpkis
Add in the mess between Delia, Phoebe, and Phoebe’s brother and all the gals are in their own little triangle this week. That’s one triangle too many.
Love triangles can be a great thing. They can really angst up the story-line as we see how certain characters deal with these stressors, but Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce is no stranger to the love triangle. The show more or less started off on one with Abby/Jake/Becca taking up the main arc in Season 1.

Of the three love triangles going down, Barbara handles hers the best followed by Abby then Jo.
Babs putting her sister’s feelings first, even though she has every right to not care at all seeing as her sister more or less did the same and stole her man, is the epitome of girl power. Guys will come and go, but sisters are forever and she finally understands this and is able to move past it.
This is how to handle a sleazy guy trying to manipulate you and your girls. You join forces against him.
Abby does let her insecurities win just a bit. However, her reaction is normal, which is something that Mike eventually does realize. It isn’t her greatest moment, but it also isn’t her worst. She’s has a lot of stress lately and this break so-to-speak is understandable.
Jo, on the other hand, is totally throwing in the towel without realizing it. Oh gosh, I want to shake her and make her see that this is the same asshole who ran off with another woman to create a whole new life. Albert is so much better for her.
I really hope she’s not going to go down the Frump drain again.

As much as I’m not a fan of the baby thing for Delia, this episode is comedy gold. I completely understand the aversion to needles but seeing her hoping around trying to talk herself into giving herself the shot was hilarious.
It’s almost as hilarious as the sequence with Tony. Using a shot of hormones as foreplay? Please don’t. That’s not sexy, there is no reason to make that sexy.
There is absolutely no reason she needs to pull her whole as dress up to her waist revealing her derriere and sexy black panties. A little goes a long way. The needle is very small after all.
Add in the music choice for that scene and it’s pretty clear where these two are headed. There is no doubt that they will get a little closer before the series ends, potentially with Delia being knocked up with Tony’s baby.
The foreshadowing they are laying down is thick.
The question remains: what will this do to Delia and Phoebe’s friendship? Phoebe is not a fan of Delia and her brother being anything to each other and she makes her thoughts clear.
She’s the protective big sister and it makes sense that she doesn’t want to see him get hurt. She’s seen Delia’s past relationships and her life is complicated at best.
Will a potential relationship between the two ruin this friendship? Stay tuned to find out.
The episode as a whole was well done. There’s more drama needing solutions and not a lot of time left to wrap things up but if anyone can do this, it’s Marti Noxon.
Noteworthy mention: Lily’s relationship with her mother is so beautiful now. Seeing her grow out of that bratty teenager phase into this potential friend to her mother is wonderful.
Costumes are, again, absolutely on point!
