Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce – Season 5

Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce Review: Rule #773 Step and Repeat (Season 5 Episode 1)

Girlfriends' Guide to Divorce, Reviews

Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce Season 5 Episode 1, “Rule #773 Step and Repeat,” kicks off their final season with a whirlwind of an episode. Season 5 time jumps ahead about 6 months or so from where Season 4 left off.

This year’s theme is happy endings or a happily ever after — as depicted by the title swap “Girlfriends’ Guide to Ever After.” The premiere sets the premise of what these happy endings will look like for each of the women. Some are great others not so much.

The Good

Jo: Jo is easily the best character out of all five women.

Her character development has been amazing over the years, and she was the best addition to this show. For starters, Alanna Ubach brings a fire to Jo that makes you fall in love with her. She’s the epitome of hard work will make you successful.

The message she’s sending out is so important.

She hasn’t had the easiest life, but she didn’t give up. She found something in Albert that, although, seemed like a weird match-up in the beginning, is easily the healthiest relationship on this show.

I’m certainly rooting for these two to end up if not married at least engaged by the end of this series.

Phoebe: Phoebe hasn’t always made the best decisions, but her decision to try to make things work out with her brother is very admirable. From what we know, the two of them don’t have the greatest relationship, but she’s trying for family.

She wants her kids to know her brother. There’s clearly love still there. Siblings don’t always get along, but they have a special bond that can’t be replicated. Wanting to repair whatever relationship she has with her brother is great. She’s turning over a new leaf.

Phoebe started off as the loopy friend, but she’s grown into a character with depth. Her happy ending is not quite clear. It may be reconciling with her brother, which would be great.

Estranged family members reuniting is certainly a happy ending. Or it may be something completely different.

Abby: Abby is finally moving on. The previous seasons she dealt with a divorce, reuniting with her ex, and never quite getting past her marriage. The little flings certainly helped her libido, but she didn’t have anything real, until Mike.

Mike Brady is just the guy she needed. He is the right amount of yummy and practical for Abby. He gets her. Their love story is adorable. She does seem to be rushing things a bit, but that’s not always bad. Sometimes when you know, you know.

Maybe her next best seller can be “Girlfriends’ Guide to Finding Love…Again.

The Bad

Barbara: Babs has something great going with Darrell, but she’s hit that point in a relationship where the heat starts to fade into something else, and she doesn’t seem to want to get past that. The rekindling with her ex wasn’t the greatest idea, to be honest.

Yes, parents should be civil for the kid’s sake, but there should be boundaries. Drinks with your ex when your boyfriend is out of town is a no-no.

Did she cheat on Darrell? It’s unclear. Was this necessary? Not really.

The cheating thing has been played on this show before. It’s old. It’s out of character for her. Bad move. Here’s hoping that isn’t what they’re going with, and she doesn’t end up a cheater by the end of the series.

The Ugly

Delia: It kills me to put her under this category because I love Delia but making her want a baby because ‘she doesn’t want to miss out’ was such a BS move.

Delia was the one character that wasn’t attached. She was the one that women around the world could relate to who don’t want children.

Not. All. Women. Want. Kids.

This sudden 180 for Delia — who literally just last season said she didn’t want kids — is such a slap in the face. The utter motion that “you’ll change your mind” is drilled into any woman’s brain who has ever stated she didn’t want to be a mom.

You have four other mothers on this show. Keeping Delia childless would not have hurt and kind of kills her character.
