Wynonna Earp Season 3: Mama Earp’s Return, Domestic Wayhaught, and More Teasers from the ATX Television Festival

ATX Television Festival, Features, Wynonna Earp

On June 8, 2018, the ATX Television Festival hosted a Wynonna Earp panel with Emily Andras, Melanie Scrofano, Tim Rozon, and Katherine Barrell.

The audience was treated to the Wynonna Earp Season 3 trailer (twice!), and then the conversation turned to what’s to come in Season 3. Also, if you were hyped about the trailer, Emily Andras stated, “the show makes the trailer feel like garbage.”

Here are a few major takeaways from the event.

Season 3 Vibes and the Original Demon (OD)

Emily Andras stated that she thinks “there is just a confidence and a kickass-ness to the characterizations and this cast that is exceptional in season 3.”

Andras stated that during Season 3 “the stakes and the consequences are bigger this year.”

This season, Andras said, the “team [is] taking on a really definitive goal, which is the demon who cursed the Earps in the first place, named Bulshar.”

Andras described Bulshar as “the original demon.” As far as your TV demons go, Andras said, “he’s serious. He’s classic. He’s traditional.” She also described him as “a formidable foe.”

If you think Bulshar sounds a bit like another word, you’re not wrong.

“We definitely don’t make puns about it all year round,” Andras said before joking, “we’re just not going to do subtle on this show.”

Baby Alice

Even though Wynonna and Doc’s daughter was sent off to safety at the end of Season 2, she’s a big part of season 3. Tim Rozon commented, “Alice is there so much more even though she’s not.”

Melanie Scrofano stated, “now everything [is] colored with this beautiful new life that is behind everything we say and do.”

Rozon echoed Scrofano’s statement by saying, “all the choices in [Wynonna & Doc’s] relationship in Season 3 have to do with Alice.”

Rozon also brought up that at the end of Season 2, Doc went to hell, which Rozon joked, “I’m sure it wasn’t fun.”

Rozon believes that “having Alive is a reason [Doc] never wants to go back there again.” He elaborated that for Doc, Alice “means something more to him than maybe Wynonna and him.”

As you can imagine, Scrofano gave Rozon a look after hearing that, causing Rozon to reply, “Aw shit.”

Andras brought up an interesting point when she remarked that the decision to send Alice off to safety affects more than just Wynonna and Doc:

“Everyone has to deal with the fallout of like what do they feel about that? Maybe they’re not all in the same emotional space.”

While Wynonna Earp getting pregnant in season two could have negatively impacted the show, Andras remarked that it “turned out to be such a blessing as far as grounding the show and hopefully taking it to the next level, B-.”

The Return of Mama Earp

Mama Earp is going to be an interesting character, that’s for sure.

Andras provided a recap of what we know about Mama Earp: “What we’ve heard about Mamma Earp so far in the show is that she abandoned three little girls with basically their alcoholic, demon-hunting father, not the picture perfect vision of motherhood.”

However, Andras reminded everyone that Mama Earp “obviously had some influence on these incredible Earp sisters who are such kickass, fierce women.”

We can expect, according to Andras, some “interesting tension and angst when we found out what [Mama Earp] is actually all about[, and] what she does to both the Earp sisters.”

Everyone had nothing but wonderful things to say about Megan Follows, who plays Mama Earp. Andras remarked that “Megan was really the perfect person to play” Mama Earp.

Scrofano chimed in with, “the person who played Mama Earp had to be complicated, and [Follows] does that very well.”

Wayhaught

You can’t discuss Season 3 without diving into this beloved couple. Thankfully, Andras said that Wavery and Nicole “are in a good place” when we pick up this season.

Barrell stated that “we see them at another stage of their relationship, which is like stage 2: being more comfortable and settling into life as a couple.”

However, Barrell pointed out that “a new level of comfort…also means that they’re at a new level of honesty with each other, and with that comes amazing tension.”

Perhaps this new level of honesty will involve a conversation between Nicole and Waverly about Waverly kissing Rosita back on Wynonna Earp Season 2 Episode 9, which is exactly what a fan asked during the panel.

Barrell began answering the question with, “I think there’s an acknowledgment that people make mistakes, and that’s a part of relationships.”

Then, this lovely little exchange happened:

Scrofano: YOU DIDN’T TELL HER ABOUT YOUR WIFE!

Andras: You didn’t tell her you knew where Mama Earp was!

Scrofano: I’m not talking about me!

This cast is nonstop fun.

Okay, back to Wayhaught.

Andras teased that “they have some talk in the bedroom, maybe, I don’t know, you guys can fast forward through it if you guys don’t like it. It’s fine.”

Barrell stated that she “loved reading those scenes with Waverly and Nicole where they’re having some really honest conversations about what they want their future to look like.” Barrell said that she’s “excited to see it play out.”

Barrell described Wayhaught’s new relationship level as “a deeper form of love,” and she stated that Wayhaught is “a nice example of a really healthy relationship.”
