Jane The Virgin: Top Moments From “Chapter Seventy-Nine” (Season 4 Episode 15)
On Jane The Virgin Season 4 Episode 15, “Chapter Seventy-Nine,” Jane and Rafael take their relationship to the next level, as do Petra and JR, Petra’s murder case meets a roadblock, Alba fails to land Jorge but lands her American citizenship, Xiomara begins recovery after surgery, and Rogelio finds common grounds with Darci.
Putting it succinctly, this chapter delivers a climactic and anticlimactic series of events as Season 4 approaches its final stretch.
Though it seems like a packed mix of plots, it is executed brilliantly in a way that the unique qualities of the Villanueva women shine through the stories.
Here are some of the moments that caught our attention on “Chapter Seventy-Nine:”
1. Playing the Cancer Card.
We see real life on display here, whereby people exploit the unfortunate incident of an ailment to attract favors or plain sympathy.
Is there really a good time to play the cancer card? I would ordinarily say “no,” but this chapter presents a convincing argument otherwise.
Most importantly, we are presented with the wrong way and the right way to play that card, the right way being when it is absolutely necessary.
Xiomara may be sick but not incapacitated and would certainly not smile at being the subject of a silly cover-up.

How Rogelio gets caught in that lie, with the look of shock and disappointment on both Darci and Xiomara’s faces, and indeed all our faces, is the springboard that further waters the ground for the mature conversation he later gets to have with Darci.
There’s no doubt that he wouldn’t like to see Xiomara’s ‘whoop-ass’ attribute in action again.
On the other hand, when Xiomara accompanies Alba to the test, the intention is to provide emotional support but that ultimately extends to alibi support that she alone could have provided at that crucial time.
To be honest, seeing her with those tubes and close to tears, even the devil would budge.
Being able to leave the house and take a few steps also means that Xiomara is making good strides towards recovery, though she almost passes out after making her case with the Immigration Officer; most importantly, that outing may grant her the courage to walk around the block, without the shame of being stigmatized.
She may need to rely on her ‘whoop-ass’ persona to make that happen though.
2. Jane The Lover.
Yes, you read correctly. Not trying to change the title of the show but simply highlighting Jane Villanueva’s display of affection to the people in her life.
First, she accidentally blurts out “I love you” to Rafael. Then she says it to Petra as well.

I have no problems with casual proclamations of love, but in this case, it is a big deal to Rafael because it is a milestone in their relationship and he thinks it is a grand gesture that needs to be commemorated.
They really do that by making it…”it” being love. You get the drift?
It’s like the anticipation of something important, then it finally happens unexpectedly; there’s no way anyone wouldn’t want to bottle that moment up and hold it forever, which is what happens.
However, Rafael needs to be called out on his insecurity. I can understand his fear of Jane’s love for late Michael, but how could he compare himself to Petra?
And if Petra could react the way she did at Jane’s platonic love declaration, she would probably need an ambulance when she hears it from JR, which brings us to another exciting moment.
3. Drinks with JR.
Jane thinks it will be great to have a family meeting with JR, who is fast becoming an inseparable part of Petra’s life and invariably, in the lives of the twins and every other person associated with the Villanueva clan.
It’s what families do. Gotta love a good family policy.
What Jane doesn’t anticipate, and the plot twist that catches me off guard, is how the tables are turned on Jane herself. Rafael had reservations about JR, heightened when she says she doesn’t like kids.
I mean, she must be a terrible person for not liking kids, right? Wrong.

For some odd reason, JR and Rafael have a lot in common, which makes a good case for never judging a book by its cover.
Jane isn’t wrong for being very awkward with her questions, after all, Petra outlawed every topic in the world, including the weather. The inevitable weather?
However, Jane’s costly error is that she doesn’t realize that this is a conversation, not an interrogation, but then again, that incident further helps explore her nature as the ‘Researcher.’
When she finds out JR is not fond of her, she continues on research mode, to the point of appearing stalker-y, just to win JR’s love.
4. Moving to the Next Level
Speaking of love, Jane’s rally on JR causes her to reveal Petra’s feelings to JR, which later transports their relationship into seriousness, as serious as bequeathing JR’s acronym to Jane Villanueva.
So, for Petra, JR becomes the real Jane, and Jane becomes JV. Petra can’t agree more, everything JR says is gold because love is a very powerful drug.
Jane and Rafael also make plans to move in together, stepping up their romance.

How laudable it is to see JR get involved in Petra’s life, to the point of meeting the kids. Her skepticism has given way to a fresh balance because all along, it felt like Petra was the one running and chasing after her.
The dynamics of that relationship will be interesting to explore, especially since Jane’s case has taken another turn, in the form of a hilarious one-eyed eyewitness, claiming to have been at the crime scene. I’m sure she is fully aware that no one will take her story seriously, not even the narrator.
5. Alba Acing her Citizenship Test.
This is notably the incident that most exemplifies the unique qualities of the Villanueva women.
Third time is NOT ALWAYS a charm.
Alba learns this the hard way, as Jorge straps her to the friend zone, after she had turned him down twice. What did you expect, Abuela? But she plows through that obstacle with the help of her girls.
The team work on display is exceptional; Jane, the Researcher, helps her prepare for the test, writing flash cards and keeping track of the date of the test.

Alba herself as the care giver, takes care of Xiomara while rehearsing with Jane. Xiomara in full ‘whoop-ass’ fashion, crowns all these efforts by ensuring that Alba gets in, after they arrive two minutes late.
Finally, Alba becomes an American citizen, surrounded by stars, plus Lady Liberty voicing her approval. Very funny embellishment to a well-written story.
6. The Amazing Narrator
These top moments would be incomplete without a special shout out to the narrator, the gift that keeps giving. Even in undesirable situations, he is always on cue to douse the pain, maintaining the feel-good appeal of the show.
