As several romantic relationships move forward in their own ways, Meredith finds herself at odds with Marie Cerone.

Tell-Tale TV writers Lauren Busser and Alamin Yohannes are joined by Starry Constellation Magazine writer Jamie Steinberg to discuss Grey’s Anatomy Season 14 Episode 15, “Old Scars, Future Hearts,” below.

Should Meredith give in to Marie and make a public statement that she helped Ellis with her research? Or should she do whatever it takes to get that patent?

Jamie: I’m on the fence. Marie seems to be very genuine about wanting to help Meredith, but also deserves credit if what she says about Ellis is true. Since there is a lack of proof, I can only say that Meredith should follow her heart.

Lauren: I don’t know. I want to believe Marie. She doesn’t seem like she’d lie, and everything we know about Ellis is that she was very competitive and I wouldn’t put it past her to do something like this.

But, like Jamie said, there is a lack of proof so I think that Meredith has to make a decision based on her gut. I can’t see her take this lying down though, so I am looking forward to what could be revealed.

Alamin: Marie is asking a ridiculous thing of Meredith. Whether Marie’s telling the truth or not, Meredith can’t know what really happened and to do that to her mother is pretty awful to her memory.

Especially given what we know about Ellis and Meredith knows that. What I am excited to see is how Meredith gets out of this situation. Or if she does, I guess. I don’t think she would do that to Ellis, but maybe she will choose her career over her mom’s legacy.

What did you think of the flashbacks on this episode? Whose set of flashbacks were your favorite?

Jamie: I loved getting a look back at Alex’s life where he was looking after his mom. He gave up so much of his youth to look after her. It must have been very hard on him and very frustrating.

Lauren: I loved how it really got at the heart of each of these characters and showed such pure moments in their lives. I think Maggie was adorable. She and her first love, and their cadaver, and that unfortunate poem is a memory I am sure was embarrassing at the time, but so cute that she can laugh at it now.

Alamin: Definitely Alex. While I love Maggie, after all these years it’s great to see some of Alex’s past and to learn more about him.

We learned pretty quickly that he had a rough life and have learned more about him through his brother and opening up to Meredith. Then Jo. But it’s different to actually see some of the things he went through.

Jo and Alex are engaged! React.

Jamie: YEAH! I am so happy they made their way back to each other. Now that Alex knows about her ex-husband and she’s been able to put that part of her life behind her, they can fully move forward in a REAL marriage together. I’m looking forward to them actually walking down the aisle sooner rather than later.

Lauren: In the world of proposals that don’t go as planned, this was a good one. I loved how Alex started looking at the ring and Jo’s reaction was just to shout: “I’M WEARING IT!”

I was on the fence about Jo and Alex when it was first revealed that she was already married, and after she’d turned him down several times. Now that they’re more open and honest with each other, and Jo can be herself, I’m excited to see where it goes.

Alamin: I am happy for them! I did expect them to get engaged after Paul died, so it’s not surprising. I liked that it was a powerful, small moment instead of some major deal.

The way it happened suits them and it was great to see Jo take control of another part of her life after enjoying being able to go anywhere with Paul out of the picture.

Tom figures out that April’s problem is her crisis-of-faith. Did his reaction to her surprise you?

Jamie: Tom has always been a devil-may-care guy. He just goes with the flow and is a love-the-one-you’re-with kind of dude. I think that makes him easy to open up to since he doesn’t judge.

So, if anyone could get Kepner to open up and actually get things off her chest about her crisis of faith it would be him. It’s nice to see she finally has someone she feels comfortable talking about what has been eating away at her.

Lauren: I don’t think Tom pinpointing the problem surprised me as much as how much he opened up to her in return. I wasn’t expecting him to be so forthcoming with his story and his own experience, but I think April needs someone to relate to on that level, who has been through it to show her things will be okay.

It was so easy for me to forget that April was Amelia’s power of attorney in “Ain’t That a Kick in the Head” and the dichotomy of who April was to who she’s become is startling.

Alamin: I am happy that someone got April talking and I do feel for Tom, but I wish that moment could have been with another character. Whether it was the intern she was sleeping with or an unexpected cast member, I just wish that moment was used to the audience to get to know someone else better, because I don’t like Tom one bit.

I’m just kind of over him. If the point was for someone surprising to get her to open up, then that could have easily been someone else.

What was your favorite quote or scene from this episode?

Jamie: Scarred hearts don’t heal, but over time scarred hearts can change. They can become smoother, softer. And some scars can even fade away. – Meredith

Lauren: “The heart is the hardest-working muscle in your body. But when it’s damaged, it’s just like skin.”

Alamin: I love the small friendship moments on Grey’s Anatomy, so I’d go with that quick scene with Meredith, Alex and Amelia. Alex and Meredith were talking about Jo and Amelia filled them in on her sleeping with Owen. I do miss the days of people running around Meredith’s house and that exchange gave me a bit of that.
