Chicago Med Review: Down by Law (Season 3 Episode 10)

Chicago Med, Reviews

Dr. Manning: Women are tough. Tougher than you think.

After a quick Google search, it’s confirmed that in Michigan the age of consent to get married is 16. However, with parental consent, children can be married at much younger ages.

In this case, on Chicago Med Season 3 Episode 10, “Down by Law,” the child bride in question is a 14-year-old girl.

It truly boggles my mind that not only did Lindsay’s father give consent that she be wed at age 14 to a middle-aged “man of god,” but that a judge signs off on it. This man should not be a reverend at all if he thinks marrying a 14-year-old is right.

Also his intense desire for her to bear children as quickly as possible is nauseating.

Despite Dr. Manning’s head injury making her more irritable than usual, she knows this marriage is wrong. She knows her patient deserves the right to her own body. Everyone deserves the right to make decisions about their own bodies.

Should Natalie have taken the rest of the day off with her head injury? Absolutely.

Yet Natalie is a stubborn woman who is dedicated to her job. She pushes through the pain and puts her patient first. With the help of Will, they are able to help this young woman choose what she wants to do with her body.

I love when the Reverend shouts at her that the church will shun her and God will judge her, and you just see her smiling as she goes into surgery. This is the smile of a young woman who finally gets a say in her own life.

Now, we know women are tough. Don’t underestimate us. Barry saves Natalie from being shot by pushing her out of the way, causing her to hit her head. Despite the pain, she fights for her patient’s rights and safety.

We will get back to the Barry situation in a bit, but for now, I’d like to focus on another strong woman: Dr. Reese.

We know how far Dr. Reese has come. Since starting exposure therapy with Dr. Charles, she has been regaining her confidence as a doctor.

Dr. Reese and Dr. Charles debate how to treat a patient who is having thoughts of killing his wife. The problem with this dynamic duo is still the lack of communication and a lack of trust when their methods of approach are different.

But Dr. Reese… what are you thinking? Locking yourself in a room with a patient, asking him to think of his scariest memory, and then handing him a real knife, offering for him to slit your throat?

Girl, listen. We’re all happy you are back being Dr. Reese and helping patients, but that move is risky. Does it work? Yes, it seemingly does. The man can’t bring himself to act on his thoughts, and he and his wife go home.

Yet, Dr. Reese almost ends up killing herself and/or her patient. She went behind Dr. Charles’s back to do this as well.

Great, Sarah, you are no longer scared, but you need to be mindful and cautious. This plan works, but what happens when the next risky plan doesn’t? What then? Will you go back to being in fear all the time again?

Now, let’s talk about Maggie and Barry.

Barry, in the past, wanted to give their relationship another chance. Maggie was hesitant — for good reason, since Barry had cheated.

Then, Barry almost gets shot, and Maggie realizes what they have is real. Maggie giving Barry another chance looks like the right decision.

Then we find out Barry’s gun permit isn’t completely valid, because he had changed his name in the past — which Maggie knew absolutely nothing about. He had this giant secret all over again.

She gave him another chance, and she let him back into her heart; now he betrays her again.

There are strong, strong women on Chicago Med. They’re always fighting for their patients, even if it means putting themselves in danger and picking themselves back up when the going gets tough.

They are powerful forces of nature.

Other Thoughts:

  • When will Dr. Bekker and Dr. Rhodes get together? There is clear chemistry there, and she obviously likes him. Connor is still just trying to get over Robin, but I know he feels something between him and Ava.
  • So sweet seeing April and Ethan comforting Maggie.
  • Do we know if Dr. Manning’s head injury is all good?
  • Connor telling Dr. Latham and Dr. Bekker about his hook-up: AWKWARD.
  • When will Ethan’s sister (who is going to be played by Arden Cho) show up?
  • Will pulling Natalie into the break room and just pulling her into that hug… my #Manstead heart!!!
