The Big Bang Theory Review: The Matrimonial Metric (Season 11 Episode 12)
Who knew science and wedding planning could go together so well?
On The Big Bang Theory Season 11 Episode 12, “The Matrimonial Metric,” Sheldon and Amy come up with an experiment to determine should be maid of honor and best man in their wedding.
The fact that they can be on the same page with such an idea is more proof why these two are so good together. Half the fun of this episode is watching them bounce off one another as they put their friends to the test.
Sheldon: Boy, if I knew getting married was going to involve so much science I would have proposed years ago.

It’s perfectly fitting with their characters to go about such a major decision in this one — one anyone who has ever planned a wedding can likely relate to. That’s one of the major strengths of this episode. A lot of people have been through this impossible dilemma of having to choose one friend or family member for that important role.
For a moment there, it seems like Howard might wind up as best man. After all, he sure handles the “catering crisis” well.
It’s the seating chart brain teaser that clues everyone in to what Sheldon and Amy are up to. Rightfully, they’re angry about being used in an experiment for a decision like that — that is until the guys realize it was coming from a something a good place.
Leonard then gives some good advice, which makes Sheldon realize who should really be best man after all.
Leonard: Look, this is your wedding. Just pick whoever you want. You don’t need to worry about anyone else but yourself. You’ve kind of been training for this you whole life.

The answer for Sheldon should have been obvious from the start, though. He’s always been closer to Leonard than he has with Howard or Raj, and Leonard was his roommate for years. Not to mention everything Leonard did for Sheldon on a regular basis.
For Amy, the choice doesn’t seem quite as obvious, but can you actually imagine anyone other than Penny as her maid of honor?
Penny’s realization that Amy is her BFF is a sweet moment, which is only topped by her storming into Sheldon and Amy’s apartment and telling Amy she has to be the maid of honor — and Amy’s reaction of course.
Penny: Look, I know this is your wedding, and you can do whatever you want, but if you think anyone but me is going to be your maid of honor then you’re an idiot because you are my best friend.

Their friendship is a relationship I’ve really enjoyed seeing develop over the years. It’s happened slowly, but it’s happened well and it’s happened naturally.
Overall, this is a solid episode with a lot of laughs. The Big Bang Theory is always at its best when it focuses on the group as a whole rather than trying to cram in a bunch of separate storylines. This one really explores the dynamics of their entire gang in a relatable and endearing way.
Other Thoughts:
- Stuart losing his place in the wedding isn’t as funny as it is just plain sad. In fact, it’s actually a little uncomfortable.
- Bernadette really just sits in bed alone while all of her friends have dinner downstairs? Why not picnic in the bedroom and keep her company?
- I really hope this mention of Georgie means we’ll meet him at the wedding, especially since we’ve seen him as a part of Sheldon’s childhood on Young Sheldon.
- “Historically, the best man’s role was to defend the bride and groom in combat. I mean, if that’s not Penny, I don’t know what we’re doing here.” – Sheldon
- How funny is it that Sheldon control’s Leonard’s thermostat?
