Blindspot Review: Technology Wizards (Season 3 Episode 11)

Blindspot, Reviews

I never thought I would say: “thank god this episode only gives me two plot threads to focus on,” but I am. On Blindspot Season 3 Episode 11 “Technology Wizards,” the team splits up in order to rescue Jane’s daughter and fix a Wizardville hack.

The return to a few key plot points is exactly what this season needed. Blindspot has been trying to tie a lot of threads together, and as a result, it feels like the season is moving at a snail’s pace. “Technology Wizards is engaging and gives us enough details to sink our teeth into, without feeling overwhelmed.

Let’s start with Jane’s daughter. The tension between Kurt and Jane is still palpable and I am glad that it is going to take them a while to recover from this lie. Sending Jane, Kurt, and Glen to Berlin is a great way to focus on the discord between Jane and Kurt and still build the larger arc.

The Germany arc also gives us the chance to see Roman outside of his storyline with Blake. Roman’s interest in Blake feels a bit like a Hallmark movie. Even though we know he has ulterior motives, seeing Roman move about that world with no idea what his plans are has been frustrating.

This appearance feels earned, but it also drops some seeds to figuring out Roman’s larger plan, while still being incredibly vague! It’s frustrating, but at least it’s a kernel to hold onto.

What’s a little more unsettling is Jane and Avery’s reunion. The “happy” reunion is short-lived when Avery starts talking about the things Roman told her. The revelation that Avery factors into Roman’s plan is another slap in the face to Jane’s happiness.

Influencing Avery, and her perception of Jane, is the most overt move that Roman has taken. Yes, he edited in his own message to their wedding video in Blindspot Season 3 Episode 4 “Gunplay Ricochet” and he pulled some strings with the gifts in Blindspot Season 3 Episode 7 “Fix My Present Havoc” but those feel like nuisance moves compared to influencing Avery.

The somber mood of Avery’s rescue is offset by a case-of-the-week involving Patterson’s Wizardville app. At the center of this case, is Rich DotCom. It’s not a tattoo, but it brings back some old storylines with Rich Dotcom and his ex-boyfriend Boston.

Ennis Esmer’s portrayal of Rich Dotcom is funny and enjoyable when he is on screen, and folding Boston into the mix this episode was a great way to pick up a thread from Rich’s previous life.

Until this episode, it felt like something had been missing from Rich’s appearances. When he would appear it Blindspot Season 1 and Blindspot Season 2, it was usually in a scene-stealing fashion and he would always have an agenda. I’ve missed that manipulative piece of his personality. Boston serves to bring it out in him and it gives him more to do than crack jokes.

In addition, it also gave Patterson’s app and the backdoor its own relevance. While I was happy that the show embraced the eighteen-month time jump, it seemed like the holes regarding what happened, got filled really quickly earlier this season. It’s refreshing to see that some of the actions are having consequences, and if the show keeps bringing these threads together I am hoping for a strong second half of the season.

Stray Thoughts:

  • Easter Egg Alert! The book that Rich is reading when Patterson comes looking for him is Vacationland by John Hodgman. John Hodgeman was a guest star on Blindspot Season 1. You may remember his character’s obsession with Turkish coffee.
  • Still not sure how I feel about Glen. Jane needs someone to talk to, and it’s healthy and realistic that she has him, but we need to see more of him before I can decide if I actually like him or not.
  • Zapata and Reade’s relationship is complicated. My heart is kind of breaking, but at the same time, I want to see more of Meg!
  • Is anyone else waiting for Hirst to come back into the picture?
