Gotham Review: Queen Takes Knight (Season 4 Episode 11)
Betrayal is the name of the game on the winter finale of Gotham.
Gotham Season 4 Episode 11, “Queen Takes Knight,” keeps up the momentum of Gotham Season 4 Episode 10. There are many twists and turns — even though a majority of them are a little predictable. This doesn’t take too much away from the episode, though, and it definitely gives us just enough juice to hold us over until after the new year.
Carmine Falcone returns with a surprise visit to his daughter, Sophia. But Daddy isn’t happy. Daddy isn’t happy at all.
Carmine Falcone: What matters is that after everything, I still consider you my daughter. That’s enough.
Of course, this is all orchestrated by the ever-present Oswald Cobblepot. Something seems a bit off about this turn of events. It makes Oswald seem a little weak and off his game. Maybe the writers were going for more of a “battle of the minds” than an all-out war?

As Carmine attempts to escort his daughter out of Gotham, a vehicle filled with gunmen enters the scene. Bullets fly, and blood is shed. Cue the slow-motion for that extra flare, and don’t forget to linger on the bodies before cutting to commercial.
It is no surprise that all eyes fall on Oswald to blame for the shooting. Never for a moment does this really fool anyone. It only seems to trick the community, causing — you guessed it — more betrayal.
The problem with being a criminal on Gotham is that you are in such great company that there isn’t anybody you can really trust. It is a problem for them, but actually pretty entertaining for us. Which fulfills the show’s sole purpose.
In the background of the episode is a literal fist fight between Bruce and Alfred. Again, no surprise who wins here. After Bruce killing Ra’s al Ghul a handful of episodes back, his story arc has become a bit of a bore.
While the over-simplified costume Bruce wore came off as a bit comical, at least he had something to do. Now, he is just partying the night away, while he sleeps all day.
Okay, we get it: Bruce lost his way. Do we really need yet another redemption story? We all know he grows up to be Batman.
As the show wraps up, we are left with a handful of bodies piling up and a fateful meeting in the cells of Arkham Asylum.
Surprise, surprise: Jerome is back. The character who isn’t the Joker, but acts like the Joker, and we all know really is the Joker in sheep’s clothing.
Although this is kind of exciting to see, it seems cheap to pull him out at the last minute. It’s kind of like the writers didn’t have faith in the rest of their work — which is a shame, because the majority of the episode is quite entertaining without this stunt.

All in all, we’re left off at a satisfying point. Most loose ends are tightly knit up, but not too neatly. There is the feeling, of course, that one string is still out there waiting to get pulled. And when it does, everything will implode once again. Let’s count the minutes until it happens.
