16 Underrated Television Shows from 2017
There are so many television shows on air right now. However, some of these captivating, wonderful shows aren’t getting the attention they deserve.
These shows listed below may have slipped under your radar for one reason or another. Regardless; you’re most definately missing out.
Here are 16 Underrated Television Shows from 2017, in no particular order:
1. Sense8
Sense8 is a Netflix original show about eight individuals from all over the world who connect to each other telepathically. They can use each other’s language, knowledge, and skills.
The show is given the most applause for its diversity and openness toward sex and sexuality.
Unfortunately, after two seasons the show was canceled by Netflix, causing a lot of backlash. Fans like myself were floored that such a diverse, unique show was abruptly cut just after its second season release.
Fans all over did petitions on twitter and made calls to Netflix which caused the streaming service to announce they would do a two-hour series finale.
Despite only having two seasons, I’m hopeful this show will wrap up nicely. It’s such an important show that deserves more viewers, and it deserved more seasons.
2. The Magicians

The Magicians is based on the book series by Lev Grossman and has become one of Syfy’s most popular shows. The third season airs in January. It’s about a young man named Quentin Coldwater who gets into a magical school called Brakebills where students learn magic and spells.
The show itself is unique because it’s like a much darker Harry Potter with adult themes. It’s like if the characters of Harry Potter started school at a college level. There’s parties with endless amounts of alcohol, drug usage, threesomes, and much more.
Above all it’s a show about magic, fantasy, love, and mystery. If you’ve fallen in love with other magical worlds, you’ll most likely enjoy The Magicians.
3. Gotham

Gotham isn’t a show for everyone, but it is a show for someone who enjoys the DC universe. It’s also for anyone who’s watched a lot of Batman movies or superhero movies in general.
Gotham’s pilot starts off the night Bruce Wayne’s parents are murdered, and Detective Harvey Bullock and new recruit James Gordon are on the case. There’s a ton of foreshadowing of what’s to come along with great set ups for our heroes and villains.
It’s a show for the everyday inner geek who loves to see the characters from the beloved DC comics come to life on the small screen.
4. Speechless

Speechless is a sitcom that centers on the DiMeo family. What sets it apart is that one of the family members has cerebral palsy. The show features actors with disabilities and the very real ups and downs a family with a disabled member might face.
The representation of the underrepresented disabled community is not the only reason people should be tuning in. It is also super hilarious. The writing is quick, and sharp, and delivered exceptionally well by the entire cast.
Micah Fowler, who plays the “speechless” JJ, serves up great reaction expressions, of which he seems to have an endless supply. Speechless is the comedy we need in current times — not just for the laughs and levity, but for a more inclusive portrayal of our community at large. Speechless also makes our list of terrific TV comedies from 2017.
5. Sweet/Vicious

Sweet/Vicious, one of the most groundbreaking television shows of time, was canceled. Never has there been a show before where viewers are thrown into the lives of sexual assault survivors and shown how their lives have changed after their assault.Sweet/Vicious, which aired on MTV, is not something that we want to still be on air; it’s something that we deserve to still see on air.
One of the main reasons I fell in love with Sweet/Vicious is because it doesn’t paint survivors as broken, fragile people who can no longer go on with life. Survivors are tenacious, beautiful people who have had the worst thrown at them and still work to make the best out of life.
Everything the show stood for is precisely what we needed, and what we still need in today’s world. Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, the creator, is a visionary who, in the making of Sweet/Vicious, brought strength, hope, and ignited a fire inside of survivors everywhere.
6. Pit Bulls & Parolees
Pit Bull’s & Parolees is a on its tenth season on Animal Planet. I only heard about this when I lived in New Orleans for a short time, but it’s an incredible show that changes lives.
The Villalobos Rescue Center was first in California, and now they’re in New Orleans, and they are the largest Pit Bull rescue in the US.
The rescue center isn’t just for Pit Bulls; the center takes care of hundreds of dogs who have been abandoned, abused, or just strays on the street. Tia Torres, her family, and the parolees they hire run the center.
New Orleans is known to be city of second chances, and they believe the same goes for the parolees and the dogs.
The facility and everyone involved goes above and beyond for these dogs, and it’s so amazing to watch. For more information head to the Animal Planet website or the official site of the rescue center: http://www.vrcpitbull.com/
