How To Get Away With Murder, Reviews

On How to Get Away with Murder Season 4 Episode 7, “Nobody Roots for Goliath,” Annalise’s love life gets interesting, Bonnie does multiple underhanded things to get to Annalise, and the rest of the crew does a whole lot of talking.

Michaela, Laurel, Frank, Oliver, and Asher spend the whole episode debating on whether or not they’re going to go through with this big Friday showdown at Caplan and Gold and discuss exactly how they’re going to pull off breaking into the company’s mainframe.

Laurel continues to overcompensate for her guilt regarding her role in Wes’s death and manipulates everybody else with all the tools in her arsenal. She continues to lead Frank by the nose by dangling her love and the chance to be the baby’s father in front of him.

So, now that we have master manipulators one and two leading the charge, I’m sure Friday’s party is happening. I’m also sure that they will frame Simon for taking Tegan’s pass and effectively get him deported.

Although Asher only goes against the plan because he is mad at Michaela, I find myself agreeing with him the most in regard to the absurdity of their game plan on Friday. I never thought I’d find myself agreeing with Asher on anything, but here we are.

Of course, the party is going to end with Connor on the operating table, Asher in jail, Laurel losing her baby, and Michaela finally snapping.

The plan is rushed and completely idiotic. But what pisses me off the most is that they’re going to embroil Annalise in their plan, and it’s going to lead her into the comatose state we see in the How to Get Away with Murder Season 4 Episode 6 flash-forward.

The Keating Four’s separate storyline this season only has one good aspect: it finally shows that Annalise is not the problem. The Keating Four is the problem. Without her help, they completely ruin everything.

Furthermore, Connor’s life is actually thriving with Annalise in his life. So honestly, all four of them and their “Annalise is the devil” mantra can officially be retired.

Connor isn’t just growing professionally, he’s also growing as a human being. Because of this, his relationship with Oliver flourishes by the episode.

Connor’s proposal absolutely melts my heart. It’s crazy how the Keating Four’s originally most shady, aggressive, and closed-off person is the same Connor that we see on How to Get Away with Murder Season 4 Episode 7.

And now all of that growth for Connor and his relationship with Oliver is being tested because of Laurel’s plan. I won’t go on a rant as to why I don’t want her to be the one to get justice for Wes because I’ve already done that in my review of How to Get Away with Murder season 4 episode 6.

However, I will say that I don’t feel pity for the repercussions of their decisions.

Nothing forces their hands this time. They actively jump into the fire, knowing they are in way over their heads. I only feel bad for Connor because he finally tries to earnestly get his life together, and he ends up on the precipice of death.

Speaking of people in way over their heads, what is Bonnie doing?

I’m starting to believe that How to Get Away with Murder Season 4 Episode 5 only explores her back-story, so we will not hate her for all the things that she’s doing now to sabotage Annalise’s happiness.

Bonnie

I know she’s doing these things because she wants Annalise to need her as much as she needs Annalise. However, that does not make me empathize with her, it makes me hate her more.

She just further proves why Annalise had to cut her off. It confuses me how she can sob into Asher’s chest claiming she messed up just to continue the same toxic behavior.

Against numerous odds and various backstabbings, Annalise is victorious, and I couldn’t be any more proud of her and her accomplishments. What’s even more exciting? Her love life is starting to heat up a bit!

Yes, yes. I know passing the Bechdel test is important. I also know that female leads have more to their characters than their romance arcs. But I can’t be the only one excited to see this love triangle grow in the narrative.

Nate walking up to the stand

When Annalise is in Nate’s home, she looks at him like a puppy dog. You can tell she’s still in love with him. You can especially see this when she begins inching toward him in the living room.

As the perpetual gentleman, of course, Nate does not take advantage of Annalise in her fragile state. And I respect him all the more for that decision.

I also respect Isaac’s ex-wife for being the one to say what everyone else has already noticed: Isaac cares about Annalise much more than just as a therapist.

Isaac looks so frantic when Annalise leaves him, and I know the writers purposely make their dialogue mirror the dialogue of a romantic breakup. I am completely here for this development between those two.

As I explain in my review of How to Get Away with Murder Season 4 Episode 2, Annalise and Isaac’s chemistry is off the charts.

They not only match each other in passion but in intelligence. When they’re in scenes together, both actors play off one another so well; it’s so hard not to see these characters become more than just a therapist and their client.

Additionally, they have both experienced the loss of a child. That’s a connection that gives their bond something so much deeper than what Annalise has with anyone else. They both understand what that pain is like and how their addictions have exacerbated that pain and sense of loss.

Against my best interest, I’m really rooting for them. I hope that sketchy conversation that Issac has in the second episode turns out to be nothing. I need more Viola Davis and Jimmy Smits scenes in my life, and one season won’t be enough.

Stray Observations:

  • The level of comfortability Annalise has with Nate is wonderful. She wears her wrap with a top-knot and everything, honey.
  • Michaela really ruins a $20,000 dress to prove a point. I can’t deal.
  • Throw the whole Bonnie away, Shonda. Please.

Overall, this is a wonderful bridge episode that successfully amped up the drama in all aspects. What did you think of this episode of How to Get Away with Murder? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below!
