The Big Bang Theory Review: The Geology Methodology (Season 11 Episode 7)

Reviews, The Big Bang Theory

On The Big Bang Theory Season 11 Episode 7, “The Geology Methodology”, Sheldon and Bert collaborate on a research project and Raj tries to get used to the idea of having a casual relationship.

Knowing Sheldon, his collaboration with Bert is difficult from the very beginning. And things only get more complicated once Sheldon realizes that he actually seems to be passionate about geology.

In Sheldon’s mind, being interested in geology makes a person not only uncool but also uneducated. Physics, Sheldon’s first love, is all about the big questions and the unknown, whereas for Sheldon areas of science like geology seem to be mostly nonsense.

Sheldon and Amy - The Big Bang Theory Season 11 Episode 7 - The Geology Methodology

I have never quite understood Sheldon’s disdain for other forms of science. Yes, physics is very rigorous and not everyone can do it, but that doesn’t mean people who cannot do physics should just stop from being involved in the world of science altogether.

I guess the whole “physics as the only one true science”- joke is one the writers of the show have gotten so used to using that they cannot drop it.

While Sheldon is usually the one who does not seem to care about what other people think of him, it was interesting to see him so confused by what he’s feeling. Unfortunately, by the time he figures out what he wants he is already too late.

I must make something known. I love Bert. In fact, I could say I am obsessed with him. He is dorky and intelligent and kind of goofy. Most importantly, it seems like he does not really give a shit about Sheldon making fun of his profession and his research. I like a man who is not afraid to upset Sheldon.

The Big Bang Theory Season 11 Episode 7 - The Geology Methodology

Could The Big Bang Theory just kick Stuart away and make Bert a regular character?

Raj and Bernadette’s colleague Ruchi connect over a cricket match and Raj, true to himself, instantly starts to plan a future for the two. Unfortunately for Raj, Ruchi doesn’t believe in love or soulmates and wants things just to be casual between the two.

Raj is all about romance and soulmates, romantic comedies and extravagant displays of attention. While a romantic like him would instantly scare me off, I desperately want Raj to find someone he can be himself with, someone who wants the same things he does.

There is a possibility that The Big Bang Theory is going to introduce a storyline featuring Raj trying his hardest to change Ruchi’s mind about love. A storyline like that would have to be done very carefully though because I would not want to see an opinionated, intelligent female character changing her mind just because the story arc of one of the male characters requires that.

Penny and Leonard - The Big Bang Theory Season 11 Episode 7 - The Geology Methodology

The Big Bang Theory has, for too many times already, made the lives of its female characters all about the guys — see what’s happening to Penny right now. She gave up on her dream of becoming an actress, got a job that does not get any screen time, and is now mostly featured as a sort of sidekick helping the other characters with their problems.

I know there are those The Big Bang Theory fans out there who think this is completely fine because the show was about the guys when it began. The thing is, though, that good television evolves and grows. The Big Bang Theory definitely has done a lot of growing throughout its 11 seasons, but a lot more could be done

Giving the female characters meaningful storylines would be a good starting point!
