Grey's Anatomy, Reviews

Big news for Meredith Grey comes with difficult timing on Grey’s Anatomy Season 14 Episode 6, “Come on Down to My Boat Baby.”

With Riggs out of the picture, the focus for Meredith is on her career — and that’s a great thing. Just as we’re meeting a new group of interns, we can remember what Meredith was like when she first arrived at Seattle Grace Hospital, where her mother was a legend.

Now, she’s the legend. She’s the one the interns can’t believe they get to work with. And not only does she wind up on the cover of a journal, but she gets the incredible news that she’s been nominated for the infamous Harper Avery award.

That news is bittersweet, though, because it comes just as she loses a patient — one that she was sure was going to be just fine.

The thing that speaks most to her character, though, is her reaction to that. When she shows up to the intern mixer and learns that she’s been nominated for a Harper Avery, she just quietly exits, and starts working on new research that she’s excited to tell Bailey about.

That’s the kind of person — and the kind of doctor — she’s become. Rather than allow herself to be upset over losing a patient, and rather than celebrating the fact that she’s been nominated for a prestigious award, she gets to work.

Meanwhile, Jackson is still not sure how to handle all the money his grandfather left him. He can buy a fancy car, and on a whim, he buys a boat and decides to take a sick day to enjoy it, bringing along Alex, Owen, Ben, and DeLuca for a guys day out.

It’s not just a day to relax, though. Jackson is driven by a need for competition. Everything the guys do is a competition, from tying surgical knots to dealing with fish. It feels a little strange until he speaks to Bailey later, telling her that he “wants in the game.”

He has a need for more, and it makes sense that he would choose to put money toward something that would make that happen while also benefiting the hospital.

The guys day out itself is really fun to watch, and if I have any complaints about this episode, it’s that we don’t get enough of it. I’d have liked to see them spend more time reacting to Ben’s news that he’s going to be a firefighter (don’t tell Bailey! Seriously, how is she going to react?) or even just to allow them more time to joke around.

Their drunken arrival to the intern mixer is priceless, though.

As for Jo, she’s decided it’s time to make a risky decision, but one that will allow her to live her life more fully. After talking with the judge in the hospital, she realizes the risk is worth it — and she decides she’s going to file for divorce from Paul. It means he’ll find her, and we know we’re going to see him return at some point, but she’s making a choice to no longer live in fear.

Other thoughts:

  • Poor DeLuca. His sister is getting close with everyone he lives with.
  • Arizona will absolutely make a great mother to a teenage girl. I’m glad we get to see some glimpses of that already.
  • It’s almost unsettling how mature Amelia and Owen are being about separating from one another.
  • “Not Mer nice. Real nice.”
  • “Did that girl really put a gun in her…?” “Holster? Yep.”
