Suits Review: Donna (Season 7 Episode 10)

Reviews, Suits

“I’m sorry, Harvey. I just had to know.”

Well, how’s that for a mid-season finale?

On Suits Season 7 Episode 10, “Donna,” Harvey and Mike manage to defeat Andrew, but it happens at a cost that will bring a major change to the firm. And while all that’s happening, Donna is dealing with an internal struggle about her feelings for Harvey, leading us to that final bombshell moment.

It is, perhaps, the perfect mid-season finale. For starters, we continue to see Harvey and Mike working together, and this time, the stakes are pretty high.

But Mike is a different guy than he was when we first met him. He’s wiser, he’s smarter, and he’s more mature. Harvey’s hard work as a mentor has paid off, which is satisfying to see.

Too bad Harvey has made so many enemies in the past. Not only does Andrew insult Donna in the worst possible way on the stand, but when the case doesn’t work out in his favor, he plays even dirtier by going after Jessica.

Jessica isn’t concerned, and it seems to hurt Harvey more than it matters to her. But what it really means? Her name can no longer be on that wall.

All season, Harvey has struggled to adjust to his new place at the firm with Jessica gone for good. This is the final step.

This firm is no longer Pearson Specter Litt. That’s not going to be an easy thing for him to accept, but it’s going to solidify his place as managing partner, and take away what was left of the comfort of his mentor.

Meanwhile, Rachel and her father work together on their pro bono case, and which serves in large part to allow to Rachel to shine. She proves to her father what a badass lawyer she is, and she does it when he needs her most — and when he can’t see all that clearly.

The look on Rachel’s face when she gets the board to sign those papers — she’s beaming and confident. Just like her father, I’m glad she and Mike put off their wedding so she can focus on her career. Because I love every second of seeing her grow as a lawyer.

As for Donna, which is, appropriately, also the title of this episode — she’s at a crossroads.

First of all, she’s rightfully angry when things go south at trial. She insisted that Louis prepare her to be on the stand, no matter how difficult, but instead, he came up with a way around it. That seems great, but she still wants to be prepared just in case.

Louis should have listened, and when the time comes, she ends up on the stand after all. Not only is that memo brought up from Coastal Motors, but her character is attacked.

Andrew paints a picture that makes it look like Donna is only COO of Pearson Specter Litt because she slept her way there. He insults her saying she doesn’t have the qualifications and doesn’t deserve that job.

Donna holds her own, but it still cuts deep.

What’s going on beneath the surface is Donna’s relationship to Harvey. Does she really have feelings for him?

Rachel sees it. Mike sees it. Louis sees it. And Donna gets a lot of advice, both directly and indirectly, about what to do next.

Mike: Tell Harvey how you feel … If I let you lose something that might make you as happy as we are, and I didn’t say something, I would never forgive myself. So if you think there is even the smallest chance that you might ever want to be together, and you don’t tell him that soon, you might lose the chance to tell him at all.

Still, she’s conflicted. Especially after what happens while she’s on the stand, there’s nothing simple about being in a relationship with Harvey (including the fact that he’s currently with another woman).

Donna is passionate about her career, but I also don’t think her promotion is fills the “more” she said she wanted at the end of Suits Season 6.

So after listening to Louis talk about how he let the woman he loves slip away, as soon as she sees Harvey, she lets everything go and kisses him.

The timing, the build up, the fact that Donna makes the move, and the look that’s left on Harvey’s face after she walks away — it’s the perfect moment.

What we’re left wondering, though, is what they each felt during that kiss. Donna says she just wanted to know, and we assume now she has an answer, but what is it? And what does that mean going forward?

Well, we’ve gotta wait until 2018 to find out. Agh!

That’s a hell of a moment to end on for now though, and I for one, am thrilled about it regardless of what it means will happen next.

Other thoughts:

  • I love the friendship that seems to be developing between Louis and Alex, and thank goodness Alex shows loyalty to Pearson Specter Litt.
  • Holly freakin’ Cromwell, you guys. Of course we shouldn’t have trusted her.
  • Mike playing matchmaker is so sweet. He cares so much for both Donna and Harvey.
  • Louis is still learning a lot about himself, and he still has a lot to overcome. Asking his therapist to pretend he’s someone he isn’t? That’s a bold move.

  • I’m not sure that I want Harvey and Donna together but it’s fun watching the drama of the will-they won’t-they.
