Dark Matter Review: Isn’t That A Paradox (Season 3 Episode 9)
Dark Matter Season 3 Episode 9, “Isn’t That A Paradox,” highlights one of the main reasons why we all fell in love with the show – the dynamics of this crew. This amusing adventure gives us the perfect mix of heartfelt and informative moments.
The malfunction pulse from the blink drive sends the Raza crew back 600 years to the 21st century. Android embraces the time jump, learning the culture and getting the essentials needed as the crew lands on Terra Prime Earth to find the other blink drive.
Five – “It’s like moving into a museum.”
It is fun to watch each reaction to the time period for the crew, though some adjust more quickly than others. Six fits right in, Three is having a hard time adjusting, and Two is enjoying the break from being chased by the GA and not in the middle of the Corporate War.

Three – “It’s the happiest I’ve seen you in a long time.”
Without the upgrade, Android comes off as an awkward human, however she proves to be useful and we see her enjoying traditions of block parties and social etiquette. Zoie Palmer has some funny moments throughout the arc, including her attempt at dancing during a jam session listening to the time period’s music.
Android – “I got double reward points.”
The good news is they find the professor and the blink drive fairly quickly, but Two and Three get taken out by an anti-theft device. We feel by now Android and Two should work on getting some new technology that can withstand these consistent shocks.
Turns out the professor is the one who put a recall in the blink drive as he was one of the original creators. He realized what could happen with this type of technology, so he traveled back to the 21st century in hopes of hiding the remaining working blink drive.

As he gets ready to send them even further back into the past, Two and Android show up to save the day again. Turns out these two make quite the pair! They come up with a plan to knock out the local sheriff’s office who are tipped off by Jake and his cousins who find the ship after following Android.
Jake – “But I think I love you!”
Jake and Five bond over video games, and he gives her the system and games when they say goodbye after he and his cousins helps Five and the crew get back to the ship. We find out that Dr. Christine Connor, the creator of FTL, is Jake’s great granddaughter and was inspired by his stories of space travel to get into the field of astrophysics.

It looks like Alternate Portia and Boone did make that alliance after all, and is trying to recruit Ryo to join their efforts. It is never a good sign when these three show up and it will not bode well for our Raza Crew.
In the final moments, Victor calls Android asking for her help. Could this be in relation to the Android’s time jump where we learned she was a part of an android uprising?
Stray thoughts:
- The cute dog that Two loves on actually belongs to Melissa O’Neil.
- Sean Cullen,Anthony Lemke, and Melissa O’Neil broke into full karaoke show-tune sing off during takes.
- Did you notice Android was showing off her new do? We dig it!
- We are still curious how they will come up with a permanent solution without losing the beautiful Natalie brown.
- We finally find out *when* the show takes place – in the 27th century.
